THE PAPER

WEST
LAFAYETTE – Southmont senior Creasy Clauser continued her run to her
second-straight Indiana High School Athletic Association Girls Track
and Field State finals.

But it’s junior teammate Kyra Burton who might have stolen Tuesday night’s IHSAA West Lafayette Regional show.

Clauser
won the 800-meters, finishing in 2:14.58 to advance to her second
consecutive IHSAA State finals in that event and make her third trip
overall.

Clauser finished a little less than three seconds ahead of Westfield’s Kaitlyn Love (2:18.44) to win the event.

The top three individuals in each regional automatically automatically qualify for the State finals.

After
Burton vaulted herself to another record-setting night, she will have
to wait a day to find out if she qualified for the State finals in the
pole vault.

Burton finished fourth in the event, setting a school and county record with her 10-foot, 7-inch jump.

She
shattered her previous record of 9-6, which she tied at last week’s
IHSAA South Putnam Sectional. Carmel’s Kate Carr won the event (10-10),
followed by Danville’s Stephanie Cullison (10-7) and Hamilton
Southeastern’s Jackie Lauer (10-7).

Burton cleared 8-1 and 9-1 on her second attempts, then went over 10-1 and 10-4 on her first attempt both times.

She
made her 10-7 attempt a little more interesting, clearing on her second
attempt with the bar bouncing off the standards and then staying back
on.

Southmont coach Marvin Walters, though, said they owe it all to Avon High School for letting them borrow a pole.

“Pole
vault poles are so expensive. We bought Kyra one pole. But we felt like
she needed another bigger, longer pole,” he said. “Rather than come up
with the money for another one, we started asking coaches around if
they had a bigger pole. Avon let us use a pole they were not using.”

Southmont sophomore Kylie Lippencott will also wait to see if she advanced in the 1,600.

She
finished fourth in the event in a personal- and season-best 5:14.17,
less than four seconds behind winner Renee Wellman from Carmel.

Clauser
and Lippencott also ran on Southmont’s eighth-place 1,600 relay team,
along with sophomore Shelby Harris and freshman Stephanie Martin. They
finished in a season-best 4:11.76.

North Montgomery sophomore Celia Kauth finished in a four-way tie for ninth in the high jump (4-10½).

PLAINFIELD – Southmont’s Jonathon Christensen did it again.

When Indiana High School Athletic Association postseason, he must add an extra bounce to his step.

He’s now set IHSAA or school records in two of his last three postseason meets.

And he’s just a sophomore.

Christensen
set an IHSAA Plainfield Sectional and school high jump record, leaping
6-feet, 10-¼-inches at Thursday’s meet and winning the event on his
final jump.

He broke a 16-year-old record, besting David Hart’s 6-10 jump in 1992.

Heading into his final jump, Christensen had to clear 6-10 to defeat Brownsburg sophomore Todd Nibbs.

Christensen
did that – and went on to earn the record. He broke his school record
of 6-9 which he originally set at last year’s IHSAA Lafayette Jefferson
Regional.

“He’s been over 7-feet in practice several times
this week,” Southmont coach Marvin Walters said. “He knows he’s capable
. . . Under all that pressure, standing around all night, he was under
control and poised. He had the self-discipline to keep his mind focused
and was able to pull it out. It’s a great feat.”

Southmont had
three athletes while county-rival Crawfordsville had two relays and two
individuals advance to next week’s IHSAA Lafayette Jefferson Regional.
The top four individuals in each event move onto the regionals.

Crawfordsville
senior Trace Cotten won the 110-meter hurdles, finishing in 15.15
seconds. He beat out Southmont senior Patrick Posthauer (15.53 seconds,
third) and sophomore Ronnie Posthauer (15.56 seconds, fourth), who also
advanced.

Patrick Posthauer also moved on in the 300 hurdles, finishing fourth (41.85 seconds).

Crawfordsville’s
400 relay of seniors Ronnie Myers, Jim Shelton, Jordan Boykin and
junior Craig Fairley placed third (44.30 seconds). They were just .16
seconds behind winner Avon and .07 seconds behind runner-up North Putnam

All
four also ran on the fourth-place 1,600 relay, which finished in
3:33.97.Boykin also advanced in the 100. He finished third (11.45
seconds).

North Montgomery had one individual advance – senior
Zach Minchin (pole vault) in the IHSAA Lafayette Jefferson Sectional.
He placed third.

BS: Southmont gets first crack at Crawfordsville in tourney play

Staff ReportIt is no
secret that sectional draws are never kind to the Sagamore Conference. That is
because in most sports, baseball included, six of the teams in the league are
in one sectional. That kind of makes it hard to avoid one another. Obviously
this year that problem takes on added meaning for most of the teams in the
conference because they are all trying to avoid top ranked Crawfordsville.

Well,
Southmont drew the short stick. The Mounties will get first crack at the mighty
Athenians. It will come in the opening game of the Danville Sectional. The
winner will joust with the winner of a contest between Boone County rivals
Lebanon and Western Boone. Danville and North Montgomery drew into the bye
round.

Frankfort
drew Western in the opening round at Northwestern. However, the highly regarded
hosts will likely await the winner of that game. In 2A action, Tri-West will
open against the hosts at the Speedway Sectional.

GREENCASTLE – Apparently a little rest can make quite the difference for Creasy Clauser.

Southmont’s
senior 800-meter runner raced her way to another record at Tuesday’s

longest-standing record, finishing in 2:14.58 – just .02 seconds ahead
of the previous-best set in 1981 by Greencastle’s Lisa Allen.

Southmont
placed sixth in the team standings, finishing with 40 points.
Brownsburg (148 1/2 points) won the 14-team meet. Crawfordsville
finished 14th with two points.

The top four individuals from each event move on to next week’s IHSAA West Lafayette Regional.

Southmont
track coach Marvin Walters decided to pull Clauser and the rest of
Southmont’s 3,200 relay team out of their event before the meet.

Thanks to some fresher legs, all his runners responded and the plan worked like a charm.

Southmont
sophomore Kylie Lippencott finished second in the 1,600 in a
personal-best 5:15.78. She finished only 1.4 seconds behind Brownsburg
sophomore Madelyn Webster.

They also teamed together on the
Mounties’ third-place 1,600 relay along, with sophomore Shelby Harris
and freshman Stephanie Martin. They finished in a season-best 4:13.21.

“Creasy
was going after the record,” Walters said. “Since we pulled out of
4×800 we thought we’d increase Creasy’s chance and Kylie’s [chance],
plus it’d keep Shelby Harris fresher for the 1,600 relay.”

Junior Kyra Burton and sophomore Cassie Parker also advanced in field events.

Burton finished third in the pole vault, tying her school- and county-record at 9-feet, 6-inches.

But Parker was the biggest surprise.

She placed fourth in the shot put with her 33-5½ throw – breaking her previous best mark by more than two feet.

“When
we left the shot put, we thought Parker was fifth or sixth and did not
know she had moved ahead to qualify,” Walters said. “I don’t think any
of our throwers scored in the county, conference or sectional last
year.”

Lafayette Jefferson Sectional

North Montgomery
sophomore Celia Kauth advanced to regionals, placing second in the high
jump (5-0). She was one inch away from the top spot and the only
Chargers’ athlete to move on.

NEW MARKET – After her visit to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Creasy Clauser knew she’d found a perfect college home.

One
of Southmont High School’s most decorated runners, she could have gone
to NCAA Division I Purdue University, ran at the top collegiate level
and stayed a little closer to her family.

But in the end, it’s the small NCAA Division III school that won out.

It’s the atmosphere, the coaches and the realm of opportunities that stole her heart.

“I
fell in love with the school during a couple of visits. It’s kind of
perfect,” said Clauser, who won two Sagamore Athletic Conference girls
cross country titles and advanced to the Indiana High School Athletic
Association cross country semistate as an individual qualifier in three
of her four years. “I was tempted to pick the big Division-I Big Ten
school,” Clauser said. “Overall putting everything together, including
running, I think the small school is definitely the better choice.”

Clauser
will attend Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, located in Terre
Haute, Ind., and plans to major in Bio-Med. She’ll join former teammate
and Southmont graduate Melissa Rogers on the cross country team.

This
past season under second-year coach Matthew Cole, Rose-Hulman had two
individuals – senior Sue Nickol (56th-place) and Rogers (57th-place) –
finish in the top 60 in the NCAA Regionals.

Rose-Hulman also
finished fourth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, with
Rogers taking the individual conference champion honors in the fall.

Clauser hopes to continue the Fighting Engineers’ and her success.

She
finished second in last year’s 800-meters at the IHSAA Girls State
Track and Field finals and is gunning for the top spot this year.

As for next season, she’s still not sure what she’d like to accomplish just yet.

“I’d definitely like to make it to Nationals,” Clauser said. “I don’t know how exactly everything works.”

She
plans on increasing her mileage totals this summer to prepare herself
for running at the collegiate level. Clauser ran 30 to 40 miles a week
over the summer last year. This year, she expects to go at least 40.

Southmont assistant track and field coach Lindsay Carlile said the Fighting Engineers should have a nice tandem next year.

“She
and Melissa should make a nice one-two punch and it will be a nice
advantage for Rose-[Hulman],” he said. “I hope their coach knows how
lucky they are now.”

Southmont girls cross country coach Cassandra Hicks agreed.

“[Creasy] will still be at the top and be a leader,” Hicks said.

NEW
MARKET – Timely hitting and near flawless defense helped lift Southmont
over Sagamore Athletic Conference rival Western Boone 8-4 on Friday
night.

The Mounties’ bats were able to stay hot as they got production all the way through the order.

Sophomores
Brayden McKinney (fifth in the order) and Lucas Miller (ninth in the
order) were responsible for five Southmont (6-4, 5-2 SAC) runs and
combined for three of the team’s 10 hits.

“Our hitting was
right, again,” Southmont coach Adam Acton said. “Our defense didn’t
have many errors. Our fielding was right. Our pitching was good. Lucas
has been really struggling. I told him before the game that he needed
to show that he could hit the ball. And he responded. I’m happy to see
that.”

Western Boone (1-9, 1-6 SAC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

The Mounties responded with two straight hits that resulted in two runs in the bottom of the first. Southmont didn’t look back.

Miller
singled and scored in the second inning. McKinney doubled home two runs
and later scored in the third. And the Mounties added two more in the
sixth.

Senior Jordan Hockersmith started on the mound and earned the win with four innings pitched and four strikeouts.

“That’s
what you expect out of Hockersmith,” Acton said. “He throws pop-ups and
ground balls. Our defense has to be sharp. We can’t make a lot of
errors when he’s pitching.”

Senior pitcher and Butler signee
Jared Earle came to the mound in the sixth and put down the Stars in
order. He recorded five strikeouts against the six batters he faced.

Earle also had a good day at the plate. He scored twice and batted a run in.

Seniors
Scott Paris and Tyler Bridge each batted in a run in the sixth inning.
Bridge finished with two hits and reached base three-out-of-four plate
appearances.

The Mounties had opportunities to score more runs
as they left two men on base four separate times. Six runners were left
in scoring position.

Western Boone had chances, too. The Stars
left the bases loaded in the third and fourth innings. Southmont
pitchers were able to pitch their way out of those jams. Each rally was
ended by a strike out.

Southmont won its third straight conference game and will travel to conference foe Frankfort on Tuesday.
