LINDEN
– Sometimes disappointment can turn into motivation. Such was the case
for North Montgomery’s volleyball team Saturday night.

The
Chargers defeated county and Sagamore Athletic Conference rival
Southmont 25-17, 25-11, 25-16 to win the Indiana High School Athletic
Association North Montgomery Sectional championship.

The
sectional championship helped erase the memory of last year’s
disappointing sectional loss to county- and conference rival
Crawfordsville.

North Montgomery coach Jodi Webster said last year’s loss has helped her team get ready for this year’s tournament run.

“We
looked at last year as a great learning experience for us,” she said.
“We have worked hard since last year and have matured a lot. This feels
pretty good.”

North Montgomery (30-3) will play Batesville in
the opening 11 a.m. Mount Vernon (Fortville) Regional semifinal this
coming Saturday.

Batesville defeated Greensburg 25-21, 25-16, 25-16 in the Batesville Sectional title match.

North
Montgomery advanced to the final after winning a grueling five-game
match (25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 25-27, 15-8) against a very aggressive
Western Boone team.

Chargers’ junior Tori Bowerman said the effects of the tough morning game gave her some concern heading into the championship.

“We
had some trouble getting up for this game because we were all dead from
the Western Boone game,” Bowerman said. “We gave all our energy
[Saturday] morning but we really did put everything we had into this
game. It definitely helped that this team plays together as a team.”

Southmont
defeated conference foe Lebanon (25-15, 26-24, 25-21) in Saturday’s
second semifinal. It’s the second-straight year the Mounties (19-8)
have reached the finals. First-year Southmont coach Amber Powers said
the Mounties serving was her team’s downfall in the match.

“Our serving is what killed us,” she said. “We could never string our serves together tonight.”

North Montgomery senior Nike Frey said playing a county rival helped her get ready for the championship game.

“Playing
Southmont helped us get ready to play tonight after the tough morning
game,” she said. “We were confident after beating Western Boone.”

Webster said winning the sectional was nice but she said her team wants to keep winning.

“This
is just the beginning of our journey,” she said. “We are looking at
what is to come for us. We are not done yet. We won’t change what we
are doing, but we will work on making ourselves better in every aspect
of the game.”

SOUTHMONT FOOTBALL: South in sectional bliss
Burkett scores game-winning TD, South wins first sectional game since 2001

By John Groth

GREENCASTLE – With the pouring rain coming down on them, Logan Petry and Jordan Burkett leapt into the already packed Southmont football team’s huddle.

They could have celebrated in the wet mass for hours.

There’s Petry, who pulled a neck muscle in the third quarter but still quarterbacked the Mounties’ to the game-tying second-half score, sore neck and all.

Then, there’s Burkett, who with one major stiff-arm, scored the game-winning fourth-quarter touchdown and carried Southmont to its first Indiana High School Athletic Association sectional victory in seven years.

Yeah, they had plenty to yell about.

Burkett scored on a 23-yard run with 1:37 remaining and visiting Southmont held off Greencastle’s final last-dash effort for a 21-14 victory IHSAA first-round sectional victory Friday night.

“I intended to go down the middle, then bumped it to the outside. I happened to get [the defender] with the stiff-arm,” said Burkett, who also caught a touchdown pass. “We feel like we’re a team, once we get to the outside, can beat anyone with our speed . . . This is telling the team that we’re headed in the right direction. I’m really excited for our next game. Words can’t even describe it.”

Southmont, which has won five-straight games, will play Sagamore Athletic Conference rival Western Boone at 7 p.m. next Friday in the IHSAA Sectional 21 semifinals. Western Boone defeated conference rival Danville 33-32.

Conference and county rival North Montgomery will take on West Vigo in the sectional’s other semifinal.

“It’s amazing,” second-year Southmont coach Desson Hannum said. “I can’t say how excited I am for this program and for the kids right now. They fought in the second half and responded to challenges . . . In the second half, I challenged them to come out and play with emotion.”

The Mounties (5-5) won their first sectional game since 2001, when they knocked out Crawfordsville 45-14 in the opening round.

They achieved their first five-game win season since 2003 and next Friday, they’ll have the chance to win back-to-back sectional games – something they haven’t done since 1998.

“I’m in awe right now,” offensive/defensive lineman Tyler Bridge said. “I’ve never felt this good, even when we won regionals in wrestling. Whoever we’ve got next better be ready for Southmont.”

Trailing 14-7 at halftime, Southmont recovered. They didn’t let missed short-field opportunities, a partially-blocked punt or a late fourth-quarter fumble inside the Greencastle 10-yard-line foil their success. Instead, they kept making plays of their own – especially in the fourth quarter.

After Greencastle blocked a punt, Southmont forced a fumble. After sophomore running back Micah Hatch fumbled inside the Tiger Cubs’ (5-5) 10-yard-line late in the fourth quarter, the Mounties’ defense remained strong again.

They stuffed Greencastle back for yardage losses on two-straight plays and ended up forcing a punt.

Then, with just over two minutes to go and Southmont with the ball inside the Greencastle 35-yard-line, the Mounties finally got their chance.

Tanner Hill raced for a 10-yard run, which set up Burkett’s 23-yard dash and the game-winning score.

Southmont pressured Greencastle junior quarterback Jordan Hickam all night and forced him into three straight interceptions – the final one by Austin Burton which ended theTiger Cubs’ comeback attempt.

“Our defensive line the last three to four weeks has played better,” Hannum said. “We’ve had better pressure with the defensive front.”

Southmont rushed for 191 yards on 43 carries, led by Burkett’s 105 on 14 carries. Petry went 6-of-13 for 94 yards and threw for two scores.

Southmont’s defense held Greencastle to just 157 total yards, only 21 through the air.

Petry was injured early in the third quarter after running for a first down on a third-and-12 play.

He made a quick run to the outside and scampered for 13 yards before pulling a neck muscle.

He missed the four plays and then lobbied to get back in the game for a scoring shot.

Hannum put him back in, and on a fourth-and-12, Petry threw a bullet to junior running back Tanner Hill at the 10-yard-line.

Hill made an over-the-shoulder catch and scored to tie the game.

Afterward, Petry was all smiles.

“It’s a pretty amazing feeling,” he said. “I was yelling at coach to put me back in [after injuring my neck]. I pulled a muscle in the back of my neck and they worked it out and was begging to be back in. You always feel better after a win. No matter how many hits you take or ho sore you’re going to be tomorrow, you don’t care.”

FB: Only Three Sagamore Teams Survive First Round

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

Only three Sagamore Conference teams remain after the first
round of sectional play Friday night. Overall, it was not a good night for
league teams, but it was a big night for one conference member. Southmont won a
sectional game for the first time in many years. Here is a round up of Friday
night’s action.

SOUTHMONT 21 GREENCASTLE 14 — The Mounties defense
stiffened after allowing 14 first quarter points. The Mounties rallied with two
second half touchdowns to prevail 21-14. The wines the fourth in a tow for
Southmont and propels them to a semi-final date with league rival Western
Boone.

WEST VIGO 14 CRAWFORDSVILLE
10 – The Athenians fell victim to the weather as much as the Vikings.
Crawfordsville could not get their passing attack going in the steady downpour
in West Terre Haute. They managed only 140
yards on the ground for the night. Their season ends at a disappointing 4-6.

NORTH MONTGOMERY 22 Brebeuf
10 — The Chargers took advantage of five Brebeuf turnovers. This one did not
resemble the shootout that everybody expected between the two high powered
offenses.

WESTERN BOONE33 DANVILLE 32—2/OT — The Stars made an extra
point and that seemingly was more difficult than a touchdown in this classic.
Tied at 20 after regulations, both teams scored in the first overtime and both
missed the PAT. Danville
scored to start the second extra session, but again misfired on the kick.
Western Boone answered the touchdown and completed the point after to advance
to round two.

Speedway
27 tri-west 7 — The Sparkplugs scored on their first drive two minutes into
the game and never looked back. Tri-West had trouble getting their running game
going throughout the evening.

PLAINFIELD 28 FRANKFORT 7 — The Hot Dogs could not stop the powerful Plainfield running
attack. The Quakers scored on four of their first five possessions and never
looked back.

Mooresville 35 Lebanon 0 — The Tigers improved a great
deal in the final weeks of the season. They did not, however, improve enough to
stop the rushing attack of Mooresville. The Pioneers improved to 8-2, scoring
on several big running plays.

MOUNTIES’ ATHLETICS FLEXING NEW MUSCLE

Mike McGraw
Hoosier Authority

I love writing stories about turnarounds. When a team or school suddenly starts winning, it is usually a story of what is best in sport—success through effort and dedication. The rise of a team always makes for a good story. When it happens to an entire program, it is a great story. To that end, what has happened at Southmont High School in the last five weeks or so is quite a tale.

Outsiders have long viewed Southmont as the little stepsister of the Sagamore Conference. Though commonly held, that perception is not necessarily true. The Mounties have long fielded some of the best wrestling and track teams in western Indiana. Nonetheless, Southmont has struggled for years trying to stretch that success across other sports. They have especially had trouble winning in the most visible sports, football and basketball. In fact, the Mounties have had just three winning football seasons in the past 23 years.

There were few indications in the early weeks of this fall that led anyone to believe this year would be any different. After their first 11 games the volleyball team stood 5-6. Three weeks ago, the football team was 1-5 and looked to be headed in the wrong direction. Indications can be deceiving.

The football team has won three straight games, including the regular season finale against arch rival Crawfordsville. They are considered favorites versus Greencastle in the sectional opener. The volleyball squad won 13 of their last 14 matches to close the regular season with a school best ever record of 18-7. The boys’ soccer team also set a school record for wins. The top runner on the girls’ cross country team has emerged as one of the favorites for the individual state championship. Her name is Kreasy Clauser and she will be the subject of a feature on these pages next week.

Hoosier Authority wanted to know the cause for the sudden dramatic success. So, we packed up and drove just south of Crawfordsville to ask some questions. We found that, as it usually does, it starts at the top with an athletic director who has a clear vision and a community that has embraced it. It extends to a group of young, aggressive coaches who understand that an athlete’s mind and spirit are almost always more important than his or her body. It ends as it ALWAYS does, with a group of hard working athletes who have caught a case of the most contagious and wonderful disease in the world—winning

In the video players on this page are interviews with athletic director Jeff Irwin, football coach Desson Hannum, and volleyball coach Amber Powers. We thought you might like to see their views on why the Mounties are riding high in the saddle.

IHSAA BEN DAVIS GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY REGIONAL: Two runners’ delight
South’s Clauser wins, Lippencott also advances to semistate

By John Groth
Sports Editor

INDIANAPOLIS – Creasy Clauser beamed with delight.

Standing in the mid-morning sun, she had run exactly the race she wanted and then some.

Southmont High School’s senior cross country runner got off to a torrid start, then motored on for her first Indiana High School Athletic Association Girls regional win.

Clauser won Saturday’s IHSAA Ben Davis Girls Cross Country Regional, finishing in 19 minutes flat – six seconds ahead of Pike’s Lydia Greene.

But this year and for the first time in her career, she’s got some semistate company with her.

Sophomore Kylie Lippencott made up six spots in the final half of the race, finishing in 14th place (20:17). The top five teams and 15 individuals advance to this coming Saturday’s IHSAA Franklin Central Semistate.

“I think I’m more excited than Kylie is,” said Clauser, who finished second in last year’s regional and beat her time by 21 seconds. “I was going to find someone to come with me. I **** practicing by myself.”

Brownsburg won the girls team competition with 40 points. Pike (71), Avon (105), Southport (121) and Perry Meridian (139) rounded out the top five and advanced to the Franklin Central Semistate. Southmont finished ninth with 197 points.

Clauser jumped out to the lead right from the start – zooming ahead of the pack and then maintaining a large gap until the last quarter of the race. She beat her first-kilometer best time by eight to nine seconds, then held off a late charge from Green at the end.

“I was trying to tell myself the last mile she’ll get discouraged and won’t try,” Clauser said. “Then someone was like ‘she’s gaining on you’, so I had to go faster. My starts are definitely the key. Every single race I’ve ran better because of my start.”

While Clauser raved about having another Southmont runner headed to semistate with her, her coaches raved about her time.

After missing the IHSAA South Putnam Sectional meet, Southmont assistant coach Lindsay Carlile was back keeping track of Clauser’s split times. He was amazed with her latest performance and acknowledged its significance.

“That puts her among the elite in the state,” Carlile said. “That puts her in the top. At the two-mile where I was at, she was eight seconds faster than the school record.”

Lippencott, meanwhile, acknowledged she didn’t feel well the entire race. She was tired and didn’t expect to advance. But somehow, over the last half of the race, she managed to find an extra boost

In 20th-place at the halfway point, she moved up six spots by the end – finishing in 14th and making the qualifying cut by one spot.

“I felt really tired,” Lippencott said. “I think [other runners] slowed down a little or I got more energy. I always pick it up at the end because the race is almost over.”

Southmont girls cross country coach Cassandra Hicks knew Lippencott had a chance to reach the top 15 but it depended on her finding that competitive fire.

“She has a lot of natural ability, which helps,” Hicks said. “Not many runners can be recovering from a stress fracture and place in the top 15.”

Those were the only two Mounties to place in the top 50. Junior Dusty Lawton finished 54th (23:09) while Shelby Detro, Kassie Hickman, Trinaty West and Katie Hunley all placed 69th or higher.

“Our main team goal was to get out of sectionals and we accomplished that,” Hicks said. “I couldn’t be prouder of the girls than I am this year, considering that five of our nine runners were not varsity runners until this year. They’ve done extremely well.”

SOUTHMONT FOOTBALL: South makes statement
South stays hot, knocks off rival CHS to give Hannum first county win

By John Groth
Sports Editor

Desson Hannum’s guiding Southmont High School football program on a history-making run.

They’re running all over Sagamore Athletic Conference opponents, making ****** defensive stops and earning plenty of respect.

After Friday night’s Montgomery County and conference clash against Crawfordsville, they sent a message. They’re not the doormat anymore.

Southmont junior quarterback Logan Petry scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak with under four minutes remaining and junior Jordan Burkett had two late fourth-quarter interceptions to seal the Mounties’ 21-14 win over county- and conference rival Crawfordsville.

“We’re trying to change some of our history here,” said Hannum, the Mounties’ second-year coach who won his first county game in four tries. “People used to look at us in the past and said ‘we’re going to come in here and beat Southmont.’ We’re not like that anymore.”

Southmont (4-5, 3-4 SAC) closed its regular season on a three-game winning streak – defeating conference rivals Frankfort, Western Boone and Crawfordsville – and now has tons of momentum heading into next Friday’s Indiana High School Athletic Association sectional game against Greencastle. It’s the most wins for the Mounties since they had six in 2003.

They’ve knocked off the Athenians two of the past three years.

In 2006, Southmont upset Crawfordsville to earn its lone victory that year. In 2008, it’s turned into a different story.

It’s the Mounties looking like the headstrong time heading IHSAA sectional play and the Athenians (4-5, 4-3 SAC) are the ones on the slide – losing their final three regular-season games and four out of their last five.

Southmont controlled the ground game – rushing for 177 yards on 47 carries – and limited Crawfordsville’s rushing attack.

The Mounties slowed down junior running back Craig Fairley (20 rushes, 70 yards) and held him to his lowest yardage total all season.

Although senior quarterback Brett McKinney completed 17-of-23 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown against Southmont’s defense, they put pressure and blitzed him up the middle all night long – forcing him to throw mainly short passes and two costly interceptions in the final three minutes.

“Their middle blitzes affected our running game and passing protection,” Crawfordsville coach Rex Ryker said. “Simple inside blitzes won the game for Southmont.”

Petry scored two touchdowns – including on a 27-yard run on the third play of the game – and rushed for 71 yards.

But his most important play came on the final drive.

Tied at 14-14 midway through the fourth quarter, he along with junior running backs Tanner Hill and Burkett and sophomore running back Micah Hatch, led the Mounties on an 11-play, 70-yard scoring drive. They ate up rushing yards, picking up five to six a carry, and clock.

Petry capped it with a one-yard plunge up the middle and Southmont had a 21-14 lead with 3:14 to play. Then, the Mounties’ defense created havoc. They pressured McKinney on a third-and-five at the Crawfordsville 38 and he lofted a pass into Burkett’s hands.

After Southmont was forced to punt, Crawfordsville had one last chance with under 50 seconds remaining.

Two plays later, senior wide receiver Jordan Boykin tipped up McKinney’s pass and it ended up flying into a waiting Burkett to close out the win.

“I was in the right spot at the right time,” Burkett said. “Before the second half I was nervous. I couldn’t get [the nerves] out. You figure your nerves would be gone after the first half. It’s extremely awesome to beat a county rival like that. Winning our past three games, we feel real confident going into sectionals.”

Hannum agreed – and he finally has the Mounties believing, too.

“We need the confidence more than anything,” he said. “Winning three weeks in a row gives us confidence and validity to what we’re doing. I thought we were the aggressive team.”

As for Crawfordsville, Ryker hopes he can fix the Athenians’ woes before their sectional game at West Vigo next week.

“We’ve had two emotional weeks and come out on the bottom of the bottom,” he said. “We have to make sure we pull together and not get the loser mentality of blaming each other.”

SOUTHMONT FOOTBALL: Mounties have high expectations

By John Groth

NEW MARKET – Desson Hannum sees the difference.

For nearly half a decade, the Southmont High School football team hasn’t played with confidence.

But with two straight convincing wins over Sagamore Athletic Conference opponents, they finally have that edge and expectation to win coming into a county rivalry game.

Two years ago, Southmont upset county- and conference rival Crawfordsville in its final regular-season game to earn their first – and only – win that season.

But this year, the Mounties could finish off its regular season with an even bigger mental boost – a three-game winning streak and huge momentum heading into Indiana High School Athletic Association sectional play.

“It’s not always the bigger team or stronger team that wins. Usually, it’s the team willing to play all out,” Hannum said. “We’ve been able to do the last couple of weeks. Guys have given everything they had, made some things happen and made big plays. We can’t be intimidated when we go in there. We’ve gained confidence over last few weeks. [Before] at times, we had been unsure. Hopefully these last couple of wins have done a little bit to dispell that.”

Southmont (3-5, 2-4 SAC) travels to county- and conference rival Crawfordsville (4-4, 4-2 SAC) for a 7 p.m. game Friday. The Mounties have won two straight games – a feat they haven’t accomplished since 2003 – knocking off conference opponents Frankfort and Western Boone.

In its last two games, Southmont has rushed for more than 230 yards each time.

They’ve beaten teams with a solid ground attack featuring four different ballcarriers – junior running backs Jordan Burkett (36 carries, 234 yards, three TD’s) and Tanner Hill (60 carries, 325 yards, 2 TD’s), junior quarterback Logan Petry (90 carries, 282 yards, 5 TD’s) and sophomore running back Micah Hatch (101 carries, 343 yards, 4 TD’s).

The Mounties have rushed for seven touchdowns in their past two games, including three by Petry and two by Burkett.

“Our offense is starting to come around a little bit,” Hannum said. “We’ve made sure we’ve gotten the ball in the hands of our playmakers really well. We’ve done a good job of distributing carries and touches between them.”

But defensively, Southmont hasn’t had to face a team in its last two games with as potent a rushing attack as Crawfordsville’s.

Frankfort has redesigned its offense and isn’t running its patented Wing-T much anymore and Western Boone’s offense relies heavily on sophomore quarterback Jared Knox, although he’s just as much a rushing threat as he is passing.

Athenians’ junior running back Craig Fairley leads the county with 1,442 yards rushing – an average of just over 180 yards per game.

“Craig is a good back and he will challenge our defense this week,” Hannum said. “The big thing is we’ve got make sure we pursue to the ball correctly and take away his cutback lanes. If he has ability to cut back it makes it hard because if he’s able to make a cut and get downhill and have a lane to run, he’s very difficult to stop. He’s a pretty powerful runner and uses his speed and power. I think our defense will be up for the challenge.”

The Mounties have also stepped up with their defensive line play of late. Southmont recorded its first sacks of season last week against Western Boone, with Ryan Chism, Cody Jacquez and Cole Wills posting one each.

They’ll have to keep the pressure up against Crawfordsville and senior quarterback Brett McKinney.

“We’re playing more aggressive defensively, trying to make more things happen and not waiting back so much defensively,” Hannum said. “We’ve done a pretty good job stopping the run the last few games, making teams throw more than they would like.”

IHSAA BROWNSBURG GIRLS SOCCER SECTIONAL: Bulldogs bounce Mounties

THE PAPER

BROWNSBURG – Southmont High School’s girls soccer team gave powerhouse Brownsburg a first-half fit.

The Mounties held them to only one goal and had stayed right there. But in the second half, the Bulldogs regained their form.

Brownsburg scored six second-half goals en route to a 7-0 win Tuesday over Southmont in a first round Indiana High School Athletic Association Brownsburg Sectional game.

“It was good. We held them and got them frustrated,” Southmont coach Laurie Hatcher said. “Our team played well.”

Southmont (7-10) recorded only two shots on goal and goalie Mallory McIntire made six saves. But Hatcher said they impressed Brownsburg’s coach.

Southmont has drawn Brownsburg as its sectional opponent in three of the last four years.

“After the game was over, the Brownsburg coach came over to our huddle and said some encouraging words,” she said. “He’s seen some of these girls four years ago, when they were freshmen. He said we’ve made strides. We walked away positive even though we lost.”

Southmont graduates two seniors – leading goal-scorer Faith Ayers and Morgan Fouty – from this year’s team.

“I feel good The team felt good,” Hatcher said. “It was a good year. I can’t complain.”

IHSAA SOUTH PUTNAM GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY SECTIONAL: Breathing a sigh of relief
South finishes fifth in sectional, advance to regionals for seventh-straight time

By John Groth

GREENCASTLE – After Tuesday afternoon’s Indiana High School Athletic Association South Putnam Sectional, the Southmont girls cross country team collectively breathed one huge sigh of relief.

Their streak remains safe.

Senior Creasy Clauser and sophomore Kylie Lippencott finished in the Top 10 and the Mounties had just enough runners in the top 50 to grab the final qualifying spot – advancing to their seventh-straight IHSAA regional.

Southmont recorded 134 points, finishing fifth as a team and 16 points ahead of Sagamore Athletic Conference rival Danville at the IHSAA South Putnam Sectional at South Putnam High School. The top five teams and 15 individuals advance to Saturday’s IHSAA Ben Davis Regional.

“I was more nervous than I should have been,” said Clauser, who finished third in 19 minutes, 53 seconds. “I get like that on races during the week because I have to think about it all day long.”

Brownsburg won the girls meet with 20 points, followed by Avon (71), Plainfield (107), Greencastle (108) and Southmont. County- and conference rival Crawfordsville placed 10th with 246 points.

“I’m excited,” second-year Southmont girls coach Cassandra Hicks said. “It worked out exactly how I thought it would work out. Danville and Greencastle were our closest competitors. I would have been surprised if Danville beat us.”

Clauser finished third and broke 20 minutes on a hilly course, trailing only Brownsburg runners Sydney Lesko (1st, 19:23) and Veronica Goduto (2nd, 19:37). Lippencott wasn’t too far behind her, placing sixth in 20:46.

Two upperclassmen – junior Dusty Lawton (39th, 24:31) and senior Shelby Detro (41st, 24:59) – and freshman Trinaty West (26:41, 51st) rounded out their top five.

Lawton’s finish may have been the key. She was sick last week and missed practices, meets and a whole week of school.

“It was a relief to see [Dusty] at practice [Tuesday] and [today] she confirmed that confidence,” Hicks said.

But Lawton acknowledged she could have run better.

“I’m saving it for Saturday,” Lawton said.

And the Mounties expect to be just as nervous for the regional meet.

“We’ll have more butterflies Saturday,” said junior Kassie Hickman, who finished 55th in 27:27

Crawfordsville had three runners place in the top 60 – Rachel Tribbett (53rd, 27:15), Priscilla Kidwell (53rd, 27:27) and Victoria Fairfield (58th, 27:34).

They also nearly met their team goal of having all runners finish under 28 minutes.

“That’s ambitious for as hilly a course this is,” first-year Crawfordsville coach Abbie Thomas said. “We didn’t even think we’d have a team for sectionals, so it was a good season for us.”
