SOUTHMONT FOOTBALL: Mounties running on a roll South wins second-straight conference game, hangs on over Stars By Cale Stephens For The Paper DOVER – The Southmont High School football team had an opportunity to do something they’ve not done in five seasons. After running just five offensive plays in the first quarter, the Mounties scored three touchdowns in the final three to earn a 28-21 victory over Sagamore Athletic Conference rival Western Boone. With the win, Southmont (3-5, 2-5 SAC) picked up its first back-to-back victories since 2003. “I’m really happy for the kids right now,” Southmont coach Desson Hannum said. “They’ve not experienced a lot of winning. It’s nice for them to experience this. I’m really happy with our progress this year. And hopefully we can carry this on for the rest of the season.” Western Boone (1-7, 1-5 SAC) held the ball offensively for all but 2:23 of the first quarter and led after a one-yard touchdown plunge by senior Aaron Hiland. Down 7-0, Southmont broke out the big plays. First was a 34-yard pass from junior quarterback Logan Petry to junior running back Tanner Hill with 4:20 to play in the first half. One minute later, after a Stars’ three-and-out, junior Jordan Burkett bolted 31 yards to put the Mounties on top 14-7. “We made some big plays when we needed to,” Hannum said. “We were able to get the run going and that set up the big play with the pass. I was very happy with the way we ran the ball. I’d like to be a lot more consistent than that with the run.” Sophomore Micah Hatch was the workhorse, running the ball 15 times, gaining 65 yards and scoring a four-yard touchdown run. His score came with 20 seconds left in the first half and put Southmont on top 21-7. Western Boone found its own big play as the Stars were able to draw closer going into halftime. With no time left, Stars’ sophomore quarterback Jared Knox found his brother and junior Ryan Knox for a 33-yard touchdown pass, leaving the score 21-14. Special teams mistakes cost Southmont momentum at the start of the third quarter. Senior Tyler Bridge was on the front line of the return and knocked down a line-drive kick. Western Boone recovered and was poised to seize the game. “We had a couple breakdowns on special teams,” Hannum said. “Our kickoff coverage needed to be better. We did muff a few.” Western Boone turned the ball over on downs and set up the Mounties with good field position. The big play struck again as Petry worked his way through the line on a keeper and broke loose in the secondary for a 57-yard score. The touchdown capped Southmont’s scoring and they led 28-14 early in the third quarter. That’s when the Mounties defense had to come alive. Southmont held Western Boone to just two first downs in the second half and 29 yards rushing. “I think we’ve been more aggressive defensively,” Hannum said. “That’s one thing we’ve tried to do – try to make plays defensively and not play so much on our heels. When we are playing downhill and wanting to hit we play good defense.” Western Boone was able to make it interesting in the fourth quarter. A holding penalty set up a first-and-20 from its own 13-yard line. Jared Knox lofted a pass up for senior Jeremy Trent. Burkett looked to make the interception but ended up knocking the ball end-over-end into the arms of Trent. Trent took the ball the rest of 87 yards for a score and brought the Stars within one touchdown, 28-21, with 3:55 to play. That’s when Southmont gave the ball to Hatch. He got first down after first down to put the game on ice. “I think (Hatch) is growing in maturity,” Hannum said. “It’s one of those things where I think he’s going to start out slow. But as the season has gone on, he’s began to mature and start to understand where he should make the cut or make the read. I’ve been really happy with his progress this season.” Southmont will end its regular season at county- and conference rival Crawfordsville next week. |

South senior Creasy Clauser wins conference, disheartened by time By John Groth Sports Editor NEW MARKET – After winning her second-straight Sagamore Athletic Conference girls cross country individual title, Creasy Clauser was less than thrilled. Entering Thursday afternoon’s meet, the Southmont High School senior had high hopes on her home course – especially with a new and what she deemed “easier” route. Clauser aimed for a finish in the low 19-minute range and a strong all-out last kilometer to boost her confidence with sectionals only two weeks away. Instead, her legs never took off the way she wanted. Clauser won the race -finishing in 20:13 – and the Southmont girls wound up third as a team, missing second-place thanks to a tiebreaker. “I did allright until the last (kilometer),” said Clauser, who won by 37 seconds over Frankfort junior Graham Warwick – defeating her for the second straight conference meet. “My turnover didn’t come (at the end). I couldn’t get my legs to move faster . . . I would have felt better had I done better.” Conference rival Frankfort won the boys and girls meets, dominating both. Frankfort had four runners place in the top 10 and won the girls meet with 34 points. Lebanon and Southmont each tied with 68 points, but the Tigers finished second in a tiebreaker thanks to their sixth runner’s finish. Danville (94) placed fourth, followed by Western Boone (121), North Montgomery (140), Crawfordsville (194) and Tri-West (203). In the boys meet, the Hot Dogs placed five runners in the top 10 and scored only 17 points. They finished well ahead of runner-up Danville (75). Lebanon (100) was third, followed by Crawfordsville (103), Southmont (107), Tri-West (133), Western Boone (183). North Montgomery only had three runners, so its score was incomplete. All eight conference teams had to adjust running on a new course in more fall-like weather. Two weeks ago, a bridge on Southmont’s course broke and the Mounties had to redesign their cross country course, Clauser and cross country coaches Marvin Walters and Cassandra Hicks acknowledged. They spent a week and a half reconfiguring the layout and then tested the course out this past Saturday. Clauser admitted the course was different – with runners having to run around the soccer field twice instead of staying below it. Two hard hills were taken out, while some flatter ones were put in, she said. “(The course) was a little easier,” Clauser said. “My time didn’t reflect that but it should have been easier. I don’t know what went wrong.” Besides Clauser, Mounties’ sophomore Kylie Lippencott placed fourth (21:09) and junior Dusty Lawton was 16th (23:49). North Montgomery sophomore Tasha Borta finished eighth (22:10). Lebanon finished second since its sixth runner (Hollin Milakovic) placed 25th, six spots better than Southmont’s sixth runner, freshman Trinity West. Hicks said the Mounties could have had a better warm up but acknowledged she’s happy with how they look before sectionals. “I felt like they could have gotten more speed before they raced,” she said. North Montgomery coach Cassie Hunt acknowledged she was pleased. They had a full girls team for the first time in a month. Although they were without top runner Alyssa Carey (illness), Borta and senior Bailey Carpenter (17th, 24:03) each placed in the top 20. Crawfordsville had three runners reach personal time bests – Priscilla Kidwell (27:03, 36th), Emily Shirar (27:06, 37th) and Victoria Fairfield (27:49, 39th). As for the boys, all three coaches had different reactions. Crawfordsville finished in fourth-place, just four points ahead of Southmont. Tony Sturm (10th, 18:35) and Ronnie Myers (20th, 19:41) each placed in the top 20. With John Lawson (25th, 20:06) and Jared Allgood (26th, 20:30) dealing with sickness and Victor Reyes out with a back injury, first-year Athenians’ coach Abbie Thomas knows they weren’t at full strength. “We’re not content,” she said. “We could have done better. We’re just injured and sick . . . I’m happy we placed in conference since we didn’t have a team last year.” Southmont boys coach Marvin Walters was ecstatic. For the first time this season, the Mounties had all six of their runners compete in a meet. Two of those runners – junior Ethan Miller (9th, 18:27) and freshman Bodin Howell (11th, 18:49) placed in the top 20. They also finally added freshman Tyler Johnson (41st, 23:13), who had was healthy enough to compete. “It was a great, great, great effort out of all six kids,” Walters said. “Tyler Johnson was hungry to get out and compete. He’s a pretty good freshman . . . We raced tonight. There’s a difference between running and racing. We raced.” North Montgomery had the county’s best finisher – junior Josh Leal. He placed sixth in 18:09. Freshman Graham Lough was 27th (20:53). “Josh was right at fourth (place) at two miles,” Hunt said. “I was hoping he had more. But it’s one of his best races.” North Montgomery next runs Monday at Seeger with Fountain Central. Crawfordsville runs Tuesday at Manual with Lebanon, while Southmont next competes in Tuesday’s Covington Triangular. |
