DANVILLE
– Southmont wasn’t able to answer a three-point barrage from Sagamore
Athletic Conference rival Lebanon and fell in the opening round of the
Indiana High School Athletic Association Sectional 25.

The
Tigers lit up the Mounties for seven straight three-point field goals
in the first half, leading them to a 79-69 victory Tuesday night at
Danville High School.

Lebanon (12-9) advances to play
conference rival North Montgomery (10-10) in Friday night’s second
semifinal. Class 3A No. 1 Danville (21-1) will play conference foe
Western Boone (9-11) in the opening semifinal. Danville beat
Crawfordsville 65-51 in Tuesday’s opening first-round game.

Southmont
(8-13) trailed by only four, 11-7, late in the first quarter when
Lebanon’s three-headed monster of sophomore Trey Hendrix, senior Jacob
Molter and freshman Caleb Brannon rattled off seven consecutive
three-point baskets.

When the dust settled, the Mounties found themselves looking at a 22-point deficit, 32-10, early in the second quarter.

“[Lebanon]
shot the lights out in the first half,” Southmont coach Dan Chadd said.
“We dug a hole, again. Despite our effort in the second half, we
couldn’t get over that hump. If you get down that big that early
against a good team, most of the time they’re not going to let you back
in [the game].”

The Mounties picked up the pace in the third quarter.

Senior
Jordan Burkett opened the second half with a three-point play. Shortly
after that, sophomore Austin Burton added two lay-ups.

Burton knocked down a three to whittle the big lead down to nine points, 50-41, with four minutes to play in the third quarter.

“We
didn’t do anything special at halftime,” Chadd said. “We didn’t yell.
We didn’t scream. We got it going up and down [the court]. But we also
came out and hit shots. We scored quick. That set the tempo. We started
chipping away and our confidence started coming around. It was a good
second half. But they play two halves.”

Hendrix then scored 10 of the Tigers’ last 16 points of the quarter to give Lebanon a 66-52 lead.

Lebanon
was winded in the fourth quarter and went ice cold from the free-throw
line. The Tigers connected on only 5-of-18 free-throw attempts in the
final period.

But the Mounties could not capitalize. They
reached the foul line only four times and hit just 6-of-17 field-goal
attempts in the fourth quarter.

Brannon led all scorers with 22 points. Molter (20) and Hendrix (17) also finished in double figures.

Junior
Trent Murray led the Mounties with 21 points. Burton and Burkett each
put in 14. Seniors Lucas Long and Curtis Rose added nine and four
points in their last basketball game in a Southmont uniform.

The Mounties ended their season on a six-game losing streak. In five of those losses, they gave up 70 or more points.

“I
can’t say enough about our seniors,” Chadd said. “They’ve been pretty
resilient. That speaks a lot about them. Those guys are not quitters.
In the last minute, they’re going as hard as anyone can go on the
floor. We’re proud of them for that. [Our underclassmen] have to grow a
lot over the summer, physically and mentally, and be ready to get after
it and improve every year. That’s all we can ask of them.”
