FB 3A SECT. 21: #1 Chatard has no problem at Southmont in 35-0 romp

By Cale Stephens

NEW MARKET – Indianapolis Chatard senior running back Ari Pappas rushed his way past his second Montgomery County team in two weeks Oct. 30.
Pappas gained 269 yards on the ground and scored four touchdowns as the Class 3A No. 1 Trojans downed Southmont, 35-0, in a Sectional 21 semifinal game played in the sloppiest of field conditions.

The Trojans (10-1) advance to the sectional championship game at No. 8 Brebeuf. The Braves (10-1) defeated North Montgomery, 21-7, in Friday’s other sectional semifinal.
What little offense Southmont (8-3) had was in the first quarter. Senior quarterback Logan Petry led the Mounties to four first downs in the opening quarter, when Chatard was shut out.
After that, the flood gates were opened.
In the raging downpour of the second quarter, the Trojans posted three touchdowns and 180 yards of offense. Pappas, who gained 182 yards in Chatard’s first-round sectional win against Crawfordsville last week, accounted for all of the yardage and all three scores.
“[Chatard] obviously made some adjustments to what we were doing,” said Southmont coach Desson Hannum. “We were trying to spread them out and get a better look at their defense.
“They out-executed us. A lot of our guys play both ways. [Chatard] was able to sub guys in and out on defense. It wore us down.”
The Mounties gained 94 of their 125 total yards in the first half. Nine fumbles (only one lost) hampered their offense in the slick conditions of the second half.
“We had trouble with the snap later on,” Hannum said. “The ball was tough to handle. We had a tough time later on adapting to the muddy conditions.”
Southmont ended its season with its most wins since recording eight in 1982. The Mounties also picked up their first football Sagamore Conference championship, finishing 6-1 in conference play and winning the title outright.
“When we look back at the season, I think we’ll be happy with what we accomplished,” Hannum said. “I don’t think anyone expected us to have an 8-3 record or win the conference. Those are things to be proud of.”
In three years as the head coach, Hannum has more sectional wins (three) than in the previous seven years (two).
“I hope [the culture at Southmont] has changed,” Hannum said. “I don’t know for sure. We’ll find out after this year. It depends on if we can get guys to come out for the football team.
“The guys on this team, in the three years I’ve been here, have put in a lot of work. That’s what it’s going to take. We need to get the guys out and have the work and the effort.”
Eleven Mounties played their final football game, including Petry, running backs Jordan Burkett and Tanner Hill, and lineman Colton Livingston.
“These seniors have been with us all the way,” Hannum said. “They’ve stuck with it in hard times and good times. They’ve kept their nose to the grindstone and shown the community that we can be successful as a football program.”

FB: Sagamore sectional wrap up

Staff Report

It might not
have turned out the way everybody wanted, but the Sagamore Conference still
made a statement in the opening round of the sectional tournament. Four league
teams advanced to the second round while at least one other gave a good showing
against one of the legendary powers in Indiana football.

North
Montgomery used a late field goal to oust conference foe Western Boone 31-28.
The other three Sagamore wins came versus non-conference competition. League
champion Southmont had little trouble with West Vigo, shutting out the Vikings
23-0. Tri-West advanced with a 7-2 grinder over Greencastle. Finally, Frankfort
looked very impressive in downing Twin Lakes 32-7.

Crawfordsville
fell to Indianapolis Chatard 38-21. Make no mistake, for the 1-8 Athenians it
was a tremendous effort against the #1 ranked team in 3A. Lebanon also gave a
respectable performance versus the #1 team in 4A, Cathedral. The Irish
prevailed 47-15. The worst defeat suffered by a conference team belonged to
Danville. The Warriors fell to highly regarded Brebeuf 49-7.

Tri-West
will now advance to play North Putnam in 2A Sectional 30. Undefeated Monrovia
and South Putnam will vie in the opposite bracket. In 3A, Frankfort appears to
have the best road. The Hot Dogs will face Peru which advanced with only its
second win of the season. It will be Southmont’s turn to tangle with
Indianapolis Chatard and North Montgomery will face Brebeuf.

NEW
MARKET - Once the celebration had died down, Logan Petry walked away
from the euphoric crowd and let out a brief sigh Friday night.

For the first time in Southmont High School history, the Mounties earned a Sagamore Athletic Conference football championship.

Their senior quarterback finally took his moment to exhale and realize he's a part of it.

"It's a happy sigh, a sigh of relief," Petry said. "I'm on cloud nine right now. It feels so good, so good."

Southmont
rushed for a season-high 434 yards and scored a season-high six
touchdowns, including two by Petry, in a 41-13 victory over county- and
conference rival Crawfordsville.

Southmont (7-2, 6-1 SAC)
clinched the conference title, winning its final regular-season game to
secure the championship outright.

It's the Mounties' first title
since joining the Sagamore Athletic Conference in 1985. They also
ensured that there will be no county champion this season and also
guaranteed their first winning season since 2003.

With less
than three minutes remaining, fans unrolled a 2009 Sagamore Athletic
Conference champions banner on the fence in front of the Southmont
bleachers.

A few minutes later, players dumped a bucket of ice water all over Hannum.

They
whooped and hollered on the field before receiving "2009 Sagamore
Athletic Conference champion" T-shirts. Then, they waved them around in
jubilation.

And, rightfully so.

Four years ago, the Mounties didn't win a game. In 2006 and 2007, they won just one each year.

Now,
under third-year coach Desson Hannum, they've reached an Indiana High
School Athletic Association sectional championship game (2008) and
earned a Sagamore Athletic Conference title (2009).

"We wanted
to come out here and be focused and finish this," Hannum said. "The
kids deserve this. You could just tell they wanted to win the outright
championship."

Southmont has won six straight games, something the Mounties haven't done in nearly 30 years when they finished 10-0 in 1981.

This victory came by bulldozing the Athenians (1-8, 1-6 SAC) on the ground.

By
halftime, Southmont had built a 21-0 lead and four players had rushed
for a combined 253 yards. Meanwhile, its defense had limited
Crawfordsville to just 33 total yards (including only five on the
ground).

"We played well, getting the stop on the first
possession and then scoring immediately," Hannum said. "We jumped out
to 14-0, 21-0 leads."

Junior running backs Micah Hatch (16
rushes, 120 yards, three TD's) and Brayden McKinney (six carries, 119
yards, one TD) finished the game with more than 100 yards each.

Petry
(nine carries, 86 yards, one rushing TD) and senior Tanner Hill (10
carries, 80 yards, one receiving TD) had 80 yards or more.

McKinney
filled in for injured starter and senior Jordan Burkett (ankle), and
showed his double-digit average per carry is no fluke. Three of his six
carries went for 30 or more yards.

"We've got at least five
guys who can run the ball," Hill said. "[Opponents] don't know who to
cover and covering five guys is hard to do."

Southmont also kept
Crawfordsville senior running back Craig Fairley bottled up for
two-and-a-half quarters. He had just 16 carries for 37 yards before
leading the Athenians on two late scoring drives. He finished with 186
yards on 21 carries.

Only a week after upsetting Class 3A No.
12 and county- and conference rival North Montgomery, Crawfordsville
suffered a pounding.

They Athenians had already been hit hard with the flu during the week and had plenty of players missing from practice.

Then, the Mounties rolled over them on the field.

"They
just exploited everything. They did a great job," first-year Athenians'
coach Sean Gerold said. "It's tough. We had a pretty bad week of
practice. It stinks."

Now, Crawfordsville gets the reward of traveling to Class 3A No. 1 Bishop Chatard for its first-round IHSAA sectional game.

"It'll
be a challenge to keep everything up. We'll see how it goes," Gerold
said. "I told the guys I want to play with guys who just want to go out
and play football."

Southmont will head to West Vigo.

And the Mounties will be full of confidence and excitement.

"I haven't seen much of West Vigo on film," Hill said. "But the Mounties will be ready to fight."

BSOC: Sectional wrap-up for Sagamore Conference

Staff Report

Crawfordsville
will carry the banner of the Sagamore Conference into regional play this
season. The Athenians are the only league team to claim a sectional title. They
did so Monday night by downing county rival Southmont 7-1. Southmont had
previously ousted North Montgomery.

Elsewhere in
the league, Frankfort suffered a heartbreaking loss to Lafayette Central
Catholic in the opening round at Lafayette, 1-0. Western Boone fell to
University 2-1 in the opening round at Zionsville and Lebanon soon joined them
on the sidelines after being blasted 7-0 by powerful Zionsville.

Tri-West
made it to the championship match at Brownsburg but fell to the hosts 5-0. The
Bruins had defeated Bethesda Christian 2-0 to reach the championship tilt.
Danville also felt heartbreak. They fell 1-0 to Plainfield on penalty kicks.

FB: Southmont survives Western Boone, 16-13, in overtime

By Jeff Hodge
Contributing Writer
CRAWFORDSVILLE – On a cold, rainy Friday night in October, there is nothing better than two titans to battle on a muddy football field – especially on Homecoming.
That was the case Oct. 9 as Sagamore Conference schools Western Boone and host Southmont got together in what turned out to be an overtime doozie. After surrendering a touchdown to tie the game at 13-all with less than a minute to play in regulation, Southmont bounced back with a 22-yard field goal from senior Curtis Rose in OT to win it.
The victory – coupled with shocking league losses by both Class 3A No. 6 North Montgomery and Lebanon – means that Southmont (6-2 overall, 5-1 in Sagamore play) can clinch the conference crown outright for the first time in forever Oct. 16 with a win over visiting Crawfordsville.
In just under three seasons, Southmont coach Desson Hannum has brought this southern Montgomery County community together and made Friday nights something to enjoyed and anticipated as the week goes on.
With his Mounties riding high on a five-game winning streak, Hannum has a simple motto for this group of young men who are coming of age:
“Losing is not an option.”
The Mounties opened the game with a six-play, 61-yard possession capped off by a 15-yard touchdown run from senior Jordan Burkett for an early 7-0 lead. But Western Boone (5-3, 3-3) marched downfield on its opening drive to even the score at 7-7 on a four-yard pass from Levi Remley to Tyler Aguirre near the end of the first quarter.
It was not unit 2:10 remained in the fourth quarter, though, that Southmont was able to mount a sustainable drive, which was culminated on a two-yard run by junior Micah Hatch. But a bad snap on the ensuing PAT and heavy rush from the Stars made the score 13-7.
WeBo, which won the total yardage battle 225-146, took only seven plays to cover 59 yards in 72 seconds. On 3rd and 10, Aguirre threw a quick slant to Jared Knox, who broke several tackles in slipping past several Southmont defenders and raced down to the Mounties’ 16.
After three straight incomplete passes, the Stars pulled out the vaunted halfback option pass and caught the Mounties by surprise. Jared Knox took a toss sweep to the right and appeared to be going for the goal line, but he pulled up and found Ryan Knox all alone in the back of the end zone to tie it at 13-all.
All Western Boone needed was to kick the point after for a victory. But the Mounties sent an all-out jail break toward kicker Thomas Garrity, with several players jumping over the center of the line. Garrity pulled the ball badly to the left with just 51 seconds to play, and we were headed to overtime.
Southmont won the toss and elected to play defense – a great choice by Hannum since his troops had played stellar “D” the entire evening. The Stars were unable to move the ball, losing a yard then enduring three incomplete passes to fail on their OT possession.
The Mounties managed to move the ball down to the 5 on three successive running plays, setting up Rose for a game-winning 3-pointer. WeBo tried to ice Rose by calling a timeout, but Rose, who also plays on Southmont’s boys soccer team, calmly drilled the kick/
After the game, Hannum was very proud of his team.
“Any time you’re in conditions like this, you know your defense can’t play a lot out there,” said the coach. “We weren’t able to give them a lot of first downs, but we were able to win the close one tonight.
“That’s a heck of a job by our kids.”
Southmont will finish the regular season Oct. 16 at home against previously winless Crawfordsville (1-7, 1-5), a 27-14 mega-upset winner over North Montgomery in Week 8. Western Boone will return home next Friday to tackle Lebanon (5-3, 4-2), another Week 8 upset victim after falling in the mud, 7-0 in overtime, at Danville.

FB: Southmont shuts out Sagamore foe Frankfort, 35-0

By Phil Friend
ThePaper24-7.com

FRANKFORT – Southmont’s football team still owns a share of the Sagamore Conference lead.

Week after week, these Mounties are proving they are for real. Leading by two touchdowns Oct. 2, Southmont took control by scoring on the opening possession of the third quarter and never looked back, defeating conference rival Frankfort 35-0.

(CHECK THE GALLERY FOR GAME PICTURES FROM RYAN MANERS OF RUSTED ROOF PHOTOGRAPHY!!)

Southmont’s Tanner Hill took the second-half kickoff 50 yards to the Frankfort 38-yard line. Five plays later, Jordan Burkett plowed in from two yards for a 21-0 Southmont lead. The score was set up by a 32-yard scamper from quarterback Logan Petry.

“That was a huge lift for them, and that may have been the nail in the coffin for us,” said Frankfort coach Tom Potts.

The Mounties (5-2 overall, 4-1 in league play) tacked on two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter on an 18-yard run by Micah Hatch and a 10-yard score from Brayden McKinney.

Two things hurt host Frankfort: tackling and play at the line of scrimmage. The Hot Dogs (3-4, 2-3) missed numerous tackles throughout the game as Burkett, Hatch, Petry, and company finished with 225 yards rushing on 43 carries.

“We thought our tackling was poor tonight,” Potts said. “It’s tough because you try to tackle (Petry), and the fullback (Hatch) nickel and dimes it. He keeps getting five, six, seven yards per carry and first downs.

“They were patient enough to keep handing it to them.”

Those first downs were created by Southmont’s offensive line, which never allowed Frankfort to penetrate the backfield to prevent those back-breaking runs.

“We wanted to make sure we came out this evening to control the line of scrimmage and to play a physical game,” said Southmont coach Desson Hannum. “That’s what Frankfort wanted to do as well, and it was crucial to the win tonight.”

Petry led the Mounties with 70 yards rushing and added 55 yards passing, along with a touchdown pass to Burkett. Hatch ran for 59 yards and a score, while Hill and McKinney had 25 apiece.

The closest Frankfort ever got to the end zone was the Southmont 33-yard-line, which occurred on the final play of the game. Before that, it was the Southmont 40, which the Hot Dogs reached near the end of the first half before Blake Ayers threw an interception with about 40 seconds left.

The Hot Dogs managed 177 yards on the ground and 236 overall. Dylan Timmons led the way with 61 yards.

“It starts up front, and they probably beat us on both sides of the ball,” Potts said. “We faced bigger lines but their option is pretty good – probably the best, most complete option attack we’ve seen this year.”

Southmont scored on its first two possessions of the game as Petry finished an 11-play, 54 yard drive with a one-yard score. The next drive went 63 yards on six plays, culminated on a nine-yard pass from Petry to Burkett.

“He’s the general of the team,” Hannum said of Petry. “He makes sure offensively and defensively we’re in the right play or coverage.

“He has a lot that he takes on his shoulders and he’s a capable individual – we’re lucky to have him as part of our team.”

Next up for Southmont is an Oct. 9 home game against suddenly cold Western Boone (5-2, 3-2), a 34-21 Week 7 loser to Tri-West Hendricks. The Mounties sit in a three-way tie for first place in the conference with North Montgomery and Lebanon, and all three teams have gone 1-1 against the other two.

Frankfort will host those same Bruins (3-4, 2-3) next Friday night.
