W: North Montgomery has best day among Sagamore teams in sectional action

Staff Report

There are
advantages to wrestling a very tough schedule during the regular season. North
Montgomery proved that Saturday in the Crawfordsville Sectional. The Chargers
qualified 13 of 14 wrestlers through to regional competition in finishing
second in the team competition. They also claimed one individual champion.
Southmont and Crawfordsville were in the same field and finished third and
fourth respectively. The Mounties advanced 11 grapplers with one champion while
Crawfordsville crowned three individuals but only advanced seven in total.

Danville and
Tri-West competed in the tough Avon Sectional. Danville fared well by advancing
six wrestlers and crowning two champions. The Bruins had one champion and
advanced four to the next level.

Frankfort,
Lebanon, and Western Boone competed in the Zionsville Sectional. Lebanon fared
the best of the three teams. The Tigers advanced six individuals to regional
competition. Frankfort advanced three people while Western Boone moved two
wrestlers to regional bouts. The Stars did capture one individual champion.

In all, the Sagamore will have 52 wrestlers in regional competition and nine of those will carry the moniker of sectional champion.

* = Sagamore Athletic Conference meet record

By John Groth
Sports Editor

Next
year, Crawfordsville swim coach Mark Hesse might petition to start the
Sagamore Athletic Conference swim meet preliminaries with a different
event.

The defending champs didn't come out with the gusto their coach expected.

In fact, it took nearly half of Thursday night's meet before they woke up.

So,
he's thinking start the meet at its usual two-thirds through point -
the 500-yard freestyle - instead. Once Crawfordsville competes in that
event, Athenians' swimmers seem to turn their intensity up.

"We
woke up toward the end of the meet. I think I should petition to start
the meet with the 500 free[style]. When it gets closer to seven
o'clock, we do better," Hesse said. "I was frustrated with the
beginning of the meet. We weren't sharp. If we're not ready, the kids
in sixth end up ninth or 10th or whatever. You can't change that on
Saturday. We fought back. I was pleased with our backstroke and
breaststroke. That was very exciting to see."

Crawfordsville
advanced 17 swimmers (10 boys, seven girls) from Thursday's individual
preliminaries to the championship finals overall. County-rivals
Southmont (five boys, three girls) and North Montgomery (five girls,
three boys) will each have eight swimmers apiece in the finals.

The
top eight swimmers advance to the Saturday's 1:30 p.m. championships
finals at the high school, while the next eight swim in the consolation
finals.

Twelve Crawfordsville swimmers will swim two
individual finals events each.. Both boys and girls teams advanced two
swimmers to the finals in six of the eight events.

But the Athenians didn't start to take off until late in the meet.

From the 500 freestyle on, Crawfordsville placed two swimmers in the top eight each of the final three events.

That
included senior girls swimmer Missy Robinson earning the top seed and
setting a conference record in the 100 breaststroke. She finished the
event in 1:05.18 - breaking 2009 North Montgomery graduate Emily
McIlrath's record of 1:07.86 set last year.

Still, as well as they swam late, Hesse wished that effort was there at the beginning of the meet.

"We
talked about having a sense of urgency," he said. "If we're complacent
and just there, we can't compete with people that aren't . . . That's
where we're struggling right now. We don't have that sense of urgency
every time out."

Senior Dakota Smoll (50 and 100 freestyles),
sophomores J.D. Furr (100 and 200 freestyles) and Clayton Servies (200
and 500 freestyles) and freshmen Keith Ridge (200 and 500 freestyles)
and Will Fairfield (200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke) will
swim two events each for Crawfordsville's boys team.

Smoll
held his top seed in the 50 freestyle (22.67 seconds) and is one of
only two county boys swimmers - along with Southmont senior Ian Line
(100 breaststroke, 1:04.49) - to hold and own top finals seeds.

All seven Crawfordsville girls swimmers who advanced to the finals will swim in two events each.

Seniors
Victoria Fairfield (200 freestyle and 100 butterfly), Rebecca Howland
(200 individual medley and 500 freestyle) and Robinson (50 freestyle
and 100 breaststroke), juniors Kelly Menzel (200 individual medley and
100 butterfly), Holly Hunt (200 freestyle and 100 backstroke) and Haley
Horner (100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke) and sophomore Shelby Conrad
(500 freestyle and 100 backstroke) will have double duty.

Robinson
held her top seeds in both events, while Howland (200 individual
medley, 2:25.46) and Fairfield (100 butterfly, 1:03.04) also each
earned top seeds in one of their two events.

Although
Crawfordsville had more than double the amount of championship
finalists as Southmont and North Montgomery, both the Chargers and
Mounties had a couple of individuals make an a nice splash.

Southmont
junior Alex Clauser (100 and 200 freestyles) and Tyler Huckstep (100
backstroke and 200 individual medley) will join Line as the three
Mounties who will swim in two events each. Junior Aaron Wheeler (100
butterfly) and sophomore Jacob Jarvis (500 freestyle) also advanced to
the finals.

Line finished with his third-fastest 100
breaststroke swim and Mounties' coach Kevin Hedrick thinks he could
drop a little more time and set his second personal record this week.

Line broke Southmont's pool record with a 1:03.89 in Tuesday's home meet against Seeger.

"[Ian]
had a couple of turns where he was a little out of position and
gliding. That added a little bit [of time]," Hedrick said. "Otherwise,
he probably would've been pretty close to where he was at Tuesday
night."

Southmont's girls team had three swimmers - senior Emily
Jarvis (200 and 500 freestyles), junior Cassie Parker (100 butterfly)
and sophomore Victoria Burkhart (200 individual medley and 100
backstroke) advance to the championship finals.

North
Montgomery's boys team received consistency from senior Kevin Amstutz,
who advanced in the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley.

But
seniors Todd Mellish (100 backstroke) and Wade Miller (100
breaststroke) also had amazing prelims swims, said boys coach Erin
Yeager. Mellish placed third in the 100 backstroke (59.78 seconds) -
swimming the event in less than a minute for the first time this season.

"I'm
so thrilled for [Todd]. He's worked hard all season long and busted out
all kinds of time in practice," Yeager said. "He's really pushed
himself to get to the next level, next spot."

Girls coach John
Walker had five swimmers advance - including seniors Kelly Thompson,
Jessica LeJeune and Lakyn Riley, junior Taylor Simpson and sophomore
Jana Amstutz.

LeJeune advanced to her first championship finals
ever, placing sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.44). She joined
Amstutz (third, 1:15.03) in the event.
