BSOC: Sagamore Teams Face Tough Assignments In Sectionals

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

The four team boys’ soccer sectional involving Montgomery County schools has a familiar look. For
the third straight year, Crawfordsville and North
Montgomery
are scheduled for a first round showdown. This comes on
the heels of a 1-0 Crawfordsville victory in the regular season match a little
over a week ago.Southmont would appear to have drawn a break with the pairings.
The Mounties will take on North Putnam. The Mounties destroyed the Cougars in
an early season match; 13-0Motivation will surely be on the side of the
Chargers in their battle with the Athenians. Crawfordsville has won the first
round battles each of the last two seasons.

Frankfort’s
highly regarded team will head into action in the Lafayette Sectional. The Hot
Dogs drew Lafayette Central Catholic in the first round. If they defeat the
nights, a likely second round match with McCutcheon awaits.

If it wasn’t for bad luck, the Lebanon team would have no luck at
all. The Tigers fall into the sectional at powerful Zionsville and immediately
drew the hosts in the first round. Western Boone will face University in the
other half of the bracket. The bad luck didn’t stop with Lebanon.
Tri-West drew the hosts at Brownsburg and Danville
did likewise at Avon.

IHSAA LAFAYETTE JEFFERSON GIRLS GOLF REGIONAL: Storming on to the State finals
CHS’ Stormy Staton fires 77, advances to State Girls Golf Finals

By John Groth
Sports Editor

LAFAYETTE – Stormy Staton can finally say it.

She’s a State qualifier.

For the past three years, she’s been on the brink of reaching the Indiana High School Athletic Association Girls Golf State finals.

But after a near-career round and a few positive reminders from her coach, the Crawfordsville High School senior no longer sits on the precipice anymore.

Staton fired a five-over par 77 at Saturday’s IHSAA Lafayette Jefferson Regional at Lafayette Municipal Golf Course, finished as the second-lowest individual qualifier and advanced to her first IHSAA State finals.

“I couldn’t be happier. (State) was my goal and I got it,” said Staton, who finished with three straight pars to close out her round. “I made State. I’m just going to have fun now and play as good as I can.”

Staton advanced to this Friday’s IHSAA State Finals at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin, Ind. She, along with West Lafayette’s Michelle Boone (76) and Kokomo’s Kristi Cardwell (78) were the top three individual qualifiers on non-advancing teams who qualified for State.

Western won the Lafayette Jefferson Team Regional, finishing with a 336 total – only one stroke ahead of Lafayette Jefferson (337).

Cathedral (360) finished third and also advanced to the State finals, one stroke ahead of Bishop Chatard and Kokomo.

Crawfordsville (390) placed ninth out of 12 teams. The top three teams advance.

North Montgomery senior Miranda Pettit (84) and Southmont senior Taylor Davis (97) also competed as individuals but didn’t finish in the top three and advance.

But this day belonged to Staton.

After advancing to the IHSAA regionals the past three years, Staton parred her way through to State.

She couldn’t have started out much better.

Opening on the back nine, Staton fired an even-par 36 – staying consistent with seven pars, one birdie and one bogey – and led the field of 72 golfers halfway through, though she didn’t know it at the time.

But after parring the first two holes on the front, she fell into a funk.

Staton went five-over par over the next four holes – bogeying holes three, five and six and double-bogeying the par-five fourth hole.

She hurried shots, launched a drive out of bounds and started thinking too much.

That’s when Crawfordsville coach Darren Haas stepped in.

He talked with her between holes four and five, five and six and six and seven – telling her she was the leader at the halfway point and settling her down.

“She knew she had a career round going and yanked one (at four) out of bounds. She got upset after that,” Haas said. “I reminded her she was the leader at the halfway point. Then she was upset I told her. Then she realized she was the leader. I’m glad I told her.”

So was Staton. She ended up parring the final three holes – including making a key short putt on hole No. 9 after hitting her tee shot way right and under some trees.

“After my double bogey, (coach Haas) told me I was leading the field and doing good,” Staton said. “He told me I need to keep playing good to go to State.”

Pettit had the county’s second-lowest score but went home disappointed in her final high school meet.

After shooting a 42 on the back, she had a 47 on the front nine – finishing with two sevens on the final two holes.

“I did good until the last two holes. I got in the sand and had a triple (bogey) and a double (bogey),” said Pettit, who hopes to still play in college. “I usually do good out of the sand. I was hitting the ball really well. I hit my irons really well. I was sinking a lot of putts . . . I hit the ball better than I have all season. But it was those last couple holes again.”

As for Crawfordsville’s other four golfers – sophomores Courtney Hamilton (97), Rebecca Johnson (111) and Amber Johnson (113) and freshman Clancy Wolf (105), Haas said they had respectable rounds.

But more importantly, they learned what it takes to get to regionals and now to the State finals.

“The big thing is Stormy set a great example,” Haas said. “We’re all sophomores and freshmen. She didn’t talk about it. She was not ‘hey, look at me.’ She just did her job. She was unselfish . . . We weren’t here to make it into State. The girls were cheering for Stormy to do that. The kids know how to do it now.”

SOUTHMONT GIRLS SOCCER: South wins Invite

THE PAPER

NEW MARKET – Southmont High School’s girls soccer team won their second-straight Southmont Invitational.

But the Mounties sure made the title game exciting, needing sudden death overtime to earn revenge and the title win.

Junior Danielle Baker, the team’s third shooter, scored the game-winning shootout goal in sudden death overtime to lift Southmont to a 1-0 championship game win over Sagamore Athletic Conference rival Western Boone.

Southmont (4-8) knocked out two conference opponents in its own invitational – picking up a 3-2 win over county- and conference rival North Montgomery in the opening game. It’s the second time the Mounties have defeated the Chargers this season.

Then, Southmont defeated Western Boone in the championship, avenging a 1-0 Aug. 21 loss earlier this season. Western Boone defeated North Putnam 3-0 to reach the title game.

“We beat North Montgomery in the regular season and barely lost to Western Boone 1-0. Coming back and beating a team a second time is tremendous.” Mounties’ coach Laurie Hatcher said.

Senior Faith Ayers scored two of Southmont’s three goals against North Montgomery, while sophomore Brooke Nace added the other. Nace also had an assist, as did sophomore Emma Hatcher.

North Montgomery’s (2-10-2) two goals came from sophomore Celia Kauth. Senior Marie Long and junior Samantha Copeland each had assists.

North Montgomery lost 3-1 to North Putnam in the consolation game, with Long scoring the Chargers’ lone goal off a Kauth assist.

“Southmont did a good job of possessing the ball and not giving us opportunities to tie. They didn’t allow us to come back,” North Montgomery coach Julie Hodges said. “We need to stop letting teams be able to let the last goal in on us and finish it out. That’s what we’re struggling with.”

Southmont next plays Tuesday at Benton Central, while North Montgomery plays Wednesday at Lebanon.

FB: 4A Lebanon thumps visiting 3A Southmont, 38-7

By Jeff Hodge
Contributing Writer

LEBANON – From the opening kickoff Sept. 26, host Lebanon was in total control of the Tigers’ 38-7 Sagamore Conference victory over Southmont.

Jason Sickels took the opening kick up the middle and broke to the right side, dashing 68 yards to the Southmont 12-yard line. It took Lebanon’s Andrew Stevens three rushes to score on a four-yard run and, after a failed extra-point boot, the Class 4A Tigers (2-4 overall, 2-2 conference) were up 6-0 in the first two minutes of the game.

Southmont was forced to punt on its first possession, and the one-yard kick – yes, one yard – gave the Tigers the ball at 3A Southmont’s 28. Lebanon could not capitalize on its great field position, turning the ball over on downs at the Mounties’ 10.

On first down, however, Lebanon’s Austin McKinsey smashed through the outmatched Southmont offensive line to sack Logan Petry in the end zone for a safety. Now up 8-0, the Tigers took control of the game with a subsequent 14-play drive covering 6:36 as Jon Sickles boosted the Tigers lead to 14-0 with a two-yard run.

Southmont’s Logan Petry scored the Mounties’ sole touchdown in the second quarter on a seven-yard run, the drive set up after Scott Paris intercepted Lebanon’s Matt Beard. But Jesse Boley nailed a 48-yard field goal for Lebanon as time expired to close out the first half with Lebanon leading, 18-6.

Southmont hoped to get back in the game with the first possession of the second half, but the Mounties turned the ball over on an interception. The Tigers then rolled over the undersized Mounties on a 10-play, 39-yard drive, pounding the ball on the ground before Kameryn Wright scored from a yard out.

Beard later connected with Austin Swafford on a 15-yard touchdown pass one play after Lebanon recovered a fumble by Southmont (27 carries for just 59 yards on the ground), and Trent Richardson scored on a 15-yard run for the final score of 38-7.

Lebanon, led by Beard’s 79 yards, rushed for 221 yards and four touchdowns in a game where it could have been worse than what the final score showed.

“The seniors are leading by example – the younger players are following their seniors and just not giving up,” said Lebanon coach Kent Wright. “Tonight we played a complete game throughout the night.”

Wright feels that his team is peaking at the right time and has a chance to catch either 3A No. 5 North Montgomery (6-0, 4-0) or Crawfordsville (4-2, 4-0) for the conference title. The Tigers, in fact, travel to Crawfordsville next Friday.

Southmont, meanwhile, returns home Oct. 3 for a conference clash with Frankfort (1-5, 1-3).

SOUTHMONT BOYS TENNIS: Mounties gain confidence, face rival Chargers today

THE PAPER

NEW MARKET – Nathan Poynter finally has the Southmont High School boys tennis team back up to a .500 record.

After the Mounties’ 4-1 win Monday afternoon over visiting Rockville, they’re starting to develop more confidence and starting to work up to their potential.

They’ll definitely need that growing poise, especially heading into today’s match against county- and Sagamore Athletic Conference rival North Montgomery (14-1, 4-0 SAC) – who hasn’t lost a conference match so far this season.

“We don’t feel there’s much pressure on us,” Poynter said. “So we’re going to go out, going to change a few things and it will either work or it won’t. We’re going to be kind of aggressive.”

On Monday, senior Jared Earle (No. 2 singles) and junior Jacob Roberts (No. 3 singles) picked up wins, as did senior Kyle McMurry and junior A.J. Bradshaw (No. 1 doubles) and senior Colt Hill and sophomore Jonathon Christensen (No. 2 doubles).

Roberts needed three sets to win, while McMurry and Bradshaw won thanks to a second-set tiebreaker.

But Poynter still thinks the Mounties (5-5) need to play more relaxed.

“We’ll be loose and hit out on the ball and see where it takes us,” he said.

VB: Southmont Takes Wild Win At Lebanon

Staff report

In the end, it could not have been closer. Southmont downed Lebanon in a
five game Sagamore Conference match Tuesday evening. The match took wild swings
in momentum but ultimately was decided by a fifth game that went overtime. The
Mounties final victory line was 16-25, 25-9, 23-25, 25-12, and 19-17.

The wild swings in this one began with the Mounties complete
turnaround in game two. Despite losing a close decision in the third set, it
appeared the Mounties had the match under control with their fourth set
victory. Most of the fifth game did nothing to change that view. Southmont
actually had match point with a 14-9 lead in that decisive game. However, Lebanon rallied
back one more time with six straight points to actually take a 15-14 lead.
That, obviously, presented the Tigers with a match point opportunity but they
could not capitalize. They would have two more chances at 16-15 and 17-16 but
each time the Mounties cowed their back. Eventually, Eventually Southmont
returned the favor with a three point run that salted the match away.

NEW MARKET – This Rash spread quickly.

Somehow, Chris Rash kept finding himself in the right spot all Saturday morning.

He’d come off a cross play or receive a quick, crisp pass. Seconds later, he’d break out for a goal.

By
the end of the first half, the Mounties’ sophomore had scored from
plenty of angles and found a way to help his team bounce out of their
recent slump.

Now they’re halfway from a Montgomery County title – something they haven’t had in years.

Rash scored three goals as Southmont defeated visiting county- and Sagamore Athletic Conference rival Crawfordsville 4-1.

“We
worked on our short game this week,” said senior Tyler Witherspoon, who
had one assist. “We’ve had to adjust throughout the week with the bad
weather. It helped for the small touches and one-two combos for
(Saturday).”

Southmont (6-2, 1-1 SAC) ended its two-game losing streak and kept alive its hopes for a conference and county title.

With
head coach Alan Clifton gone because of a family wedding, assistant
coach Kyle Boots filled in and the Mounties helped him earn his first
victory.

They made crisp and clean passes, worked their give-and-go’s and executed their set plays to perfection.

Southmont scored three goals in the first half – all coming by Rash and all inside the first 20 minutes.

His
first came almost nine minutes in. He took a pass from the left side,
dribbled and launched a hard shot into the bottom right goalpost.

The
ball hit the goalpost and instead of bouncing away, like the Mounties’
shots did against Greencastle and Danville, it caromed into the goal.

Just
over eight minutes later, Rash added another off an assist and
wind-aided pass from senior Ethan Smith and then netted his third with
22:44 left in the half.

“We wanted to possess the ball as much
as we can to preserve the possession,” Boots said. “The seniors knew we
had to get it done and they came ready to play.”

For the second
straight conference game, Crawfordsville (5-4, 2-3 SAC) came out flat –
and once again that uninspiring start cost the Athenians a win.

It
also didn’t help senior goalie Miguel Salazar, who allowed all three
Rash goals, was injured during the first half (split lips) after making
a save and came out at the midway point. He later came back in and
played defense.

So Athenians’ coach Jim Kochert replaced him with junior James Miller.

Salazar actually came back in late in the first half and played defense, a move Kochert had been wanting to try for some time.

Crawfordsville
senior Tyler Whittington scored with 29:51 left in the game to cut the
lead to 3-1 but the Athenians couldn’t put any of their four other
second-half shots into the net.

“That’s two games in a row
where our lack of intensity in the first half has cost us the game,”
Kochert said. “I hope the guys will realize if they do come out with
the heart and intensity like Southmont came out with and we combine
that with our second halves, that we’re going to be hard to beat.”

Crawfordsville next plays Tuesday at Benton Central, while Southmont takes on

FB: Crawfordsville, North Montgomery Move To Front Of Pack

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

It is beginning to look like October 10th is going
to be D-Day in the Sagamore Conference. That is the night that Crawfordsville
will travel to North Montgomery. Those two
squads seized early control of the league race Friday night. Still, Danville and Tri-West may
yet have something to say about determining the conference champion.

Here is a look at Friday night’s action.

The big game of the evening was at Tri-West where the
unbeaten Bruins tangled with North Montgomery which
had also yet to taste defeat. The Chargers relentless ground attack and a case
of fumbleitis on the part of Tri-West led to a relatively easy 44-21 win for
the visitors from Montgomery
County
.

Danville
stayed in contention by dumping Southmont 37-21. The victory leaves the
Warriors 2-1 in league play with dates still remaining versus both Tri-West and
North Montgomery. The Mounties drop to 0-2 in
league play.

For the second week in a row, Crawfordsville escaped a close
contest. This time it was a 27-20 win over hard luck Western Boone. The victory
gives the Athenians the outright lead in the conference race at 3-0. However,
they not only still have North Montgomery on
the schedule, they also are yet to play Tri-West.

Lebanon
broke into the win column with a 17-6 victory over Frankfort. Don’t count the Tigers out. Their
murderous pre-conference schedule prepares them well for the rigors of Sagamore
action.
