ATTICA
– Southmont High School’s boys golf team finally picked up a triangular meet
win.

After failing to win their first two triangular meets, the Mounties
finally captured a three-team victory Monday afternoon – all thanks to senior
Tyler Price’s score.

Southmont won Monday’s triangular meet over
Sagamore Athletic Conference and county-rival North Montgomery by the fifth
player’s – or Price’s – score. Southmont and North Montgomery each shot a 167,
but Price (48) had a lower score than the Chargers’ fifth player, Stefan Rogers
(49). Fountain Central finished third with 183.

“It feels good, good to
sneak a win out of there,” first-year Mounties’ coach Bob Young said. “We kind
of stole it from them.”

Southmont senior Adam Teague and North Montgomery
sophomore Wade Miller each shot 38s and earned co-medalist honors.

Senior
Josiah Binch fired a 42, while senior Andrew Actis had a 43 and freshman Chris
Rash shot a 44 for the Mounties (4-3).

“I’m pleased with Chris Rash, as a
freshman, playing courses he hasn’t ever played or seen before,” Young said.
“I’m pleased with Adam Teague. But we need to keep working. We need to be more
consistent and be more in the 160 area.”

For North Montgomery, junior
Jackson Clifton added a 42, while junior Nathan Harpel had a 42 and junior Cory
Seward added a 46.

North Montgomery plays again at 4:30 p.m. today at
Covington with Turkey Run. Southmont’s next meet is at 4:30 p.m.

THE
PAPER

NEW
MARKET – Southmont High School baseball coach Adam Acton finally watched the
Mounties’ offense connect.

They just needed to return to their home
confines for their offense to start up again.

Southmont recorded 13 hits
in two games and swept a doubleheader against visiting Cloverdale, cruising to a
17-7 five-inning win in game one and earning a 5-1 victory in game two.

After recording only two hits in Thursday’s Sagamore Athletic Conference
win, Southmont (5-2) nearly quintupled that total in Saturday’s first
game.

Trailing 5-0 after three innings, the Mounties’ offense found their
rhythm – and erupted for a season-high 16 runs in the fourth inning. It’s the
most runs Southmont has scored in an inning this season and was two more than
they had scored in their previous two games.

Southmont batted around the
order three times and eight players – junior Colt Hill, Kyle McMurry, Jared
Earle, Cody Jacquez, Scott Paris, Derek Linn, Jordon Hockersmith and sophomores
Logan Petry – scored two runs apiece.

Earle had three hits, including a
double, and had two RBI. Colt Hill, Jacquez and Hockersmith each had two RBI.

Senior Tyler Price and Tanner Hill each hit doubles.

Tanner Hill
(1-0) pitched and earned his first victory.

Southmont kept up its hot
offense in the second game, scoring four runs in the first inning en route to
the win. Earle had a single and an RBI.

Scott Harris earned the win for
the Mounties.

“We finally got more than just a couple hits in a game,”
Acton said. “Hopefully it’s a confidence builder for next week and we can take
what we’ve done here. We’ve been down in a lot of ballgames and come back. We’ve
lost a couple . . . I’m proud about the team not quitting and not giving up. We
did it again down 5-0. Scoring 16 runs in an inning is rather
unusual.”

Southmont next plays in a home game at 6 p.m. Tuesday against
conference rival Western Boone.

Southmont Fares Well At Charger Relays

 –
Bob Cox
Paper of Montgomery County

For anyone attending last night’s Charger Relays they might have thought they
were in the Windy City instead of at Linden. However, despite 35 mile an hour
winds, competing coaches were proud of the way their athletes
competed.

North Montgomery track coach, Ed Stuffle, was pleased with all
the teams that showed up at the meet.

“I thought the meet was very
competitive and all the athletes gave it their best considering the conditions,”
Stuffle said.

Southmont coach Marvin Walters agreed with
Stuffle.

“I thought the athletes did extremely well and competed very
hard,” Walters said.

Walters was also happy with his team’s effort
also.

“We had kids who stepped up because of some of our kids being gone
for spring break. I am very pleased,” Walters said. “I am really happy with our
freshman class for the effort they are putting in for us.”

Neither North
Montgomery nor Southmont were able to field complete teams as both schools were
missing athletes due to spring break. However, the Southmont girl’s team was
able to earn three first place finishes and one second place finish.

The
Lady Mounties won shot put behind the effort of Miranda Judt and Bailey Davis.
The Mountie Girls’ Sprint Medley team also claimed a first place. The team
consisted of Creasy Clauser, Shelby Harris, Miranda Judt and Elen Hedge. The
Southmont team of Bailey Davis, Kylie Lippencott, Shelby Davis and Katherine
Sparks won the Girls’ 9th Grade 800 M Relay. South’s second place finish was in
the high jump as Alex Zachary cleared 6 feet.

The North Montgomery boys
had a second place finish in the discus throw as seniors Garren Holt and Nathan
Dale both recorded season bests. No other county team finished higher than third
in any of the other events.

Stuffle, who also was the meet director, said
he was pleased the meet went off with no problems.

“I thought everyone
came to compete and it was nice that no one complained about anything,” Stuffle
said. “I was extremely pleased with the competitiveness of the teams here
tonight. We had a good meet despite the weather.”

Teams competing were
besides the two county schools were Benton Central, Carroll, Frankfort, and
Western Boone. Lebanon had entered a team but did not show up for the
meet.
