THE
PAPER

NEW
MARKET – Southmont High School baseball coach Adam Acton finally watched the
Mounties’ offense connect.

They just needed to return to their home
confines for their offense to start up again.

Southmont recorded 13 hits
in two games and swept a doubleheader against visiting Cloverdale, cruising to a
17-7 five-inning win in game one and earning a 5-1 victory in game two.

After recording only two hits in Thursday’s Sagamore Athletic Conference
win, Southmont (5-2) nearly quintupled that total in Saturday’s first
game.

Trailing 5-0 after three innings, the Mounties’ offense found their
rhythm – and erupted for a season-high 16 runs in the fourth inning. It’s the
most runs Southmont has scored in an inning this season and was two more than
they had scored in their previous two games.

Southmont batted around the
order three times and eight players – junior Colt Hill, Kyle McMurry, Jared
Earle, Cody Jacquez, Scott Paris, Derek Linn, Jordon Hockersmith and sophomores
Logan Petry – scored two runs apiece.

Earle had three hits, including a
double, and had two RBI. Colt Hill, Jacquez and Hockersmith each had two RBI.

Senior Tyler Price and Tanner Hill each hit doubles.

Tanner Hill
(1-0) pitched and earned his first victory.

Southmont kept up its hot
offense in the second game, scoring four runs in the first inning en route to
the win. Earle had a single and an RBI.

Scott Harris earned the win for
the Mounties.

“We finally got more than just a couple hits in a game,”
Acton said. “Hopefully it’s a confidence builder for next week and we can take
what we’ve done here. We’ve been down in a lot of ballgames and come back. We’ve
lost a couple . . . I’m proud about the team not quitting and not giving up. We
did it again down 5-0. Scoring 16 runs in an inning is rather
unusual.”

Southmont next plays in a home game at 6 p.m. Tuesday against
conference rival Western Boone.
