LINDEN
– Sometimes disappointment can turn into motivation. Such was the case
for North Montgomery’s volleyball team Saturday night.
The
Chargers defeated county and Sagamore Athletic Conference rival
Southmont 25-17, 25-11, 25-16 to win the Indiana High School Athletic
Association North Montgomery Sectional championship.
The
sectional championship helped erase the memory of last year’s
disappointing sectional loss to county- and conference rival
Crawfordsville.
North Montgomery coach Jodi Webster said last year’s loss has helped her team get ready for this year’s tournament run.
“We
looked at last year as a great learning experience for us,” she said.
“We have worked hard since last year and have matured a lot. This feels
pretty good.”
North Montgomery (30-3) will play Batesville in
the opening 11 a.m. Mount Vernon (Fortville) Regional semifinal this
coming Saturday.
Batesville defeated Greensburg 25-21, 25-16, 25-16 in the Batesville Sectional title match.
North
Montgomery advanced to the final after winning a grueling five-game
match (25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 25-27, 15-8) against a very aggressive
Western Boone team.
Chargers’ junior Tori Bowerman said the effects of the tough morning game gave her some concern heading into the championship.
“We
had some trouble getting up for this game because we were all dead from
the Western Boone game,” Bowerman said. “We gave all our energy
[Saturday] morning but we really did put everything we had into this
game. It definitely helped that this team plays together as a team.”
Southmont
defeated conference foe Lebanon (25-15, 26-24, 25-21) in Saturday’s
second semifinal. It’s the second-straight year the Mounties (19-8)
have reached the finals. First-year Southmont coach Amber Powers said
the Mounties serving was her team’s downfall in the match.
“Our serving is what killed us,” she said. “We could never string our serves together tonight.”
North Montgomery senior Nike Frey said playing a county rival helped her get ready for the championship game.
“Playing
Southmont helped us get ready to play tonight after the tough morning
game,” she said. “We were confident after beating Western Boone.”
Webster said winning the sectional was nice but she said her team wants to keep winning.
“This
is just the beginning of our journey,” she said. “We are looking at
what is to come for us. We are not done yet. We won’t change what we
are doing, but we will work on making ourselves better in every aspect
of the game.”
