THE PAPER

WEST
LAFAYETTE – Southmont senior Creasy Clauser continued her run to her
second-straight Indiana High School Athletic Association Girls Track
and Field State finals.

But it’s junior teammate Kyra Burton who might have stolen Tuesday night’s IHSAA West Lafayette Regional show.

Clauser
won the 800-meters, finishing in 2:14.58 to advance to her second
consecutive IHSAA State finals in that event and make her third trip
overall.

Clauser finished a little less than three seconds ahead of Westfield’s Kaitlyn Love (2:18.44) to win the event.

The top three individuals in each regional automatically automatically qualify for the State finals.

After
Burton vaulted herself to another record-setting night, she will have
to wait a day to find out if she qualified for the State finals in the
pole vault.

Burton finished fourth in the event, setting a school and county record with her 10-foot, 7-inch jump.

She
shattered her previous record of 9-6, which she tied at last week’s
IHSAA South Putnam Sectional. Carmel’s Kate Carr won the event (10-10),
followed by Danville’s Stephanie Cullison (10-7) and Hamilton
Southeastern’s Jackie Lauer (10-7).

Burton cleared 8-1 and 9-1 on her second attempts, then went over 10-1 and 10-4 on her first attempt both times.

She
made her 10-7 attempt a little more interesting, clearing on her second
attempt with the bar bouncing off the standards and then staying back
on.

Southmont coach Marvin Walters, though, said they owe it all to Avon High School for letting them borrow a pole.

“Pole
vault poles are so expensive. We bought Kyra one pole. But we felt like
she needed another bigger, longer pole,” he said. “Rather than come up
with the money for another one, we started asking coaches around if
they had a bigger pole. Avon let us use a pole they were not using.”

Southmont sophomore Kylie Lippencott will also wait to see if she advanced in the 1,600.

She
finished fourth in the event in a personal- and season-best 5:14.17,
less than four seconds behind winner Renee Wellman from Carmel.

Clauser
and Lippencott also ran on Southmont’s eighth-place 1,600 relay team,
along with sophomore Shelby Harris and freshman Stephanie Martin. They
finished in a season-best 4:11.76.

North Montgomery sophomore Celia Kauth finished in a four-way tie for ninth in the high jump (4-10½).
