COVINGTON - Southmont High School boys soccer coach Alan Clifton was amazed at the Mounties' iron will Saturday afternoon.
Despite playing with only 10 players for the last 20 minutes, visiting Southmont rallied for a 4-3 victory over Covington.
Southmont (4-0) had to deal with losing two players to penalty issues.
Sophomore
Matthew Bupp received two yellow cards, while sophomore Jacob Carey was
disqualified after he committed a foul in the goalie box on a
breakaway.
But junior Erik Garcia's foot lifted them to the win.
Garcia scored three goals, including the game-winner with 9:39 remaining.
Senior Kyle Utterback added a goal and an assist, while junior Chris Rash also had an assist.
"We
found out about a young team and their determination," Clifton said.
"They kept fighting and fighting and wouldn't back down . . . Chris
Rash did an outstanding job of holding the backfield together with
Utterback and Garcia scoring. We also got great support from Curtis
Rose."
08/28/2009 – The Southmont Mounties boys’ varsity football team defeated the North Putnam Cougars, 28-13, in a non-district game.
The term “team play” was exemplified by the Mounties Friday night at North Putnam’s Cougar Stadium. Showing that they possessed the talent and, more importantly, the heart to compete and complete a game the Mountie faithful were treated to four quarters of smash-mouth football.
The offensive and defensive line play was outstanding. When Micah Hatch was called upon to blast through the middle the line made sure they made a hole for him. Senior Chance Allen led the way for the offensive line.
Senior quarterback Logan Petry contributed on both sides of the ball with the culminating moment being a hit he put on a Cougar receiver causing a dropped pass and the admiration of every Mountie faithful on hand.
The Mounties left the Cougars, whose record the last three seasons was a combined 39-3, awestruck.
All in all,
it was a solid opening night for the Sagamore football squads. Conference teams
went 403 on Friday night with Tri-West not playing until Saturday.
North
Montgomery was perhaps the most impressive team. The Chargers demolished Benton
Central 47-0 behind a stifling defense and over 200 yards from running back
Elijah Dale. Western Boone grabbed some headlines by downing tradition rich
Sheridan 28-8. Lebanon served notice that their strong finish to last season
was not a fluke. The Tigers visited Lucas Oil Stadium and downed longtime rival
Mooresville 14-7. Finally, Frankfort’s defense was outstanding as the Hot Dogs
thumped Western 21-3. The linebacking corp was especially solid for Frankfort.
Southmont fell victim to 1A power Fountain
Central 41-19. The loss stings a little more because the Mustangs are coached
by former Mountie mentor Rick Malone. West Lafayette ruined Crawfordsville’s
opener 39-7 as the Devils showed they are still a power in 3A. Finally,
Danville fell 30-14 to Hendricks County rival Plainfield
South Putnam scores: Hughes 42, Grace Aker 49, Robbie Burton 49, Kelsey Serles 52, Cierra Perry 54
Record: Southmont 1-7
GREENCASTLE - Southmont High School's girls golf team keeps inching up on the 200-stroke mark.
They came within only three strokes of that number Wednesday afternoon in a 192-203 loss at South Putnam.
South
Putnam's Heather Hughes shot a 42 to earn medalist honors by two
strokes over Southmont senior Aubri Rush (44). That ended Rush's streak
of three-straight meets where she had shared co-medalist honors.
Mounties'
senior Jenna Whalen added a 47 while junior Caitlin Williams fired a
48. Southmont's two freshmen - Katie Fields and Caytlin Isenberg - each
had rounds in the 60s.
Southmont (1-7) next plays at 4:30 p.m. today at home against Sagamore Athletic Conference rival Western Boone.
