In the end, it could not have been closer. Southmont downed
five game Sagamore Conference match Tuesday evening. The match took wild swings
in momentum but ultimately was decided by a fifth game that went overtime. The
Mounties final victory line was 16-25, 25-9, 23-25, 25-12, and 19-17.
The wild swings in this one began with the Mounties complete
turnaround in game two. Despite losing a close decision in the third set, it
appeared the Mounties had the match under control with their fourth set
victory. Most of the fifth game did nothing to change that view. Southmont
actually had match point with a 14-9 lead in that decisive game. However,
back one more time with six straight points to actually take a 15-14 lead.
That, obviously, presented the Tigers with a match point opportunity but they
could not capitalize. They would have two more chances at 16-15 and 17-16 but
each time the Mounties cowed their back. Eventually, Eventually Southmont
returned the favor with a three point run that salted the match away.
