DOVER
- Western Boone's boys basketball team slowed down the run-and-gun
Mounties but could not get enough momentum to get over the hump.
Southmont
shot 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the last 33 seconds to come
away with a 67-65 win - their first Sagamore Athletic Conference
victory this season.
Southmont (3-2, 1-2 SAC) led 61-60 when
senior Jordan Burkett was fouled and went to the foul line to shoot
one-and-one. He made both free-throws and was asked to do it again with
the Mounties leading 63-62 with 19 seconds left to play. Burkett didn't
hesitate and hit both one-and-one free-throws.
"I didn't really
have any thought of being pressured," said Burkett, who made his first
start this season in place of injured senior guard Lucas Long. "Coach
[Dan Chadd] always tells us games will come down to free throws. I just
stepped up and hit the shot, just like any other free throw."
Junior Trent Murray hit two more free throws with nine seconds to play to ice the game and the win.
Southmont set the pace in the first half by using the run-and-shoot style they've adopted this year.
They
didn't shoot very well in the first half (13 of 33 field goals). But it
was enough to put them in front, 32-23, at the break. In the second
half, Western Boone (1-5, 0-3 SAC) used a trapping defense to slow the
Mounties down.
"[Western Boone] changed our game in the second
half," Chadd said. "They tried to slow it down. I think our kids
adapted well to slowing down. We just couldn't finish. It's the same
story. We quit hitting shots because we weren't running our transition.
Then [Western Boone] started hitting. We weren't ready for the press.
But we got better [Friday night]. We had guys come in and do great
things."
The Mounties' bench played a key role. Juniors Eric
Rhoads and Brayden McKinney and senior Jacob Roberts combined for only
seven points but did the little things well.
McKinney pulled down seven rebounds, three on the offensive side, and those led to second-chance baskets.
"[Our bench] played well tonight," Chadd said. "We've got to build on it. And get ready for the rest of the season."
Murray
led Southmont with 26 points. Burkett finished with 12 points.
Sophomore Austin Burton added 11 points. Murray and senior Curtis Rose
each had 10 rebounds.
Sophomore Tyler Aguirre led Western Boone with 19 points. Junior Brandon Burtner added 13.
"It's
a real big win," Burkett added. "It's our first conference win.
Hopefully, this will spill some confidence going into [today] and the
Sugar Creek Classic."
Southmont will play North Vermillion at 7:30 p.m. today then will be off until the Jan. 8 Sugar Creek Classic.
