ROACHDALE – A change of pace lifted the Southmont boys basketball team in Wednesday’s season opener at North Putnam.

Third-year head coach Dan Chadd is implementing a faster-paced, run-and-gun offense this season.

So
far, you could call it a success, as Southmont picked up a 77-52
victory. It’s a far cry from the Mounties’ 42 points to open the
2008-2009 season.

“Our intentions are to score points,” Chadd
said. “We’re not a very big team. We did a good job pushing it and kept
with it all night. That’s going to be our game plan. We are undersized.”

Senior Jordan Burkett’s ankle injury from football season forced him to sit out for the game.

Burkett’s absence meant that junior Trent Murray was the only Mounties’ player with significant varsity experience.

Murray utilized that experience and led Southmont (1-0) with 22 points.

“I
just ran the offense,” he said. “We put in a new offense. I just called
the plays. It’s more comfortable this year. I played with a lot of
upperclassmen last year. This year, we’re all the same age. And I’ve
been playing with them for a long time.”

The Mounties shot 50 percent from the floor (31-for-62 field goals) and led from wire-to-wire.

Murray
was one of four Southmont players in double figure scoring. Sophomore
Austin Burton added 12 points, while junior Matt Overpeck had 11.
Senior Lucas Long put in 10 points.

The Mounties’ bench outscored the Cougars’ bench 18-4.

“We
played a lot of kids,” Chadd said. “The guys really played their roles
well. We got good minutes out of them. I’m pleased with tonight’s
effort. We just have to keep getting better every day in practice.”

North
Putnam (0-1) put three players in double-digit scoring. Junior Travis
Franklin led the Cougars with 15 points. Junior James Hedrick put in 14
points and senior Kyle Adams finished with 12 points and added a
game-high 13 rebounds.

“I wasn’t real happy with our
rebounding,” Chadd said. “We knew that’s going to be a weak spot. We’ve
got to do a great job of checking-out. I think [junior] Eric Rhoads
checked out every time and his guy didn’t get the rebound. That’s
something we have to pass on to the rest of the team.”

Southmont
will have over a week to prepare for its Dec. 4 opening Sagamore
Athletic Conference game at county-rival North Montgomery.
