NEW MARKET - Austin Burton's monster defensive game lifted Southmont's football team to some school history.

Southmont
High School's sophomore defensive back turned into a one-man recovery
crew Friday night - picking up - and off - whatever turnovers came his
way.

Burton recovered two fumbles and intercepted a pass all
in the first half in Southmont's 21-6 home victory over Sagamore
Athletic Conference rival Danville.

It marked the first time
the Mounties had beaten the Warriors in school history and ended their
12-game losing streak to Danville.

"Two of the three times, I
was in the right place at the right time. With the two fumbles, it was
a coincidence. On the interception, I made a good read and the ball
came to me," Burton said. "[The win] means a lot. It feels like we can
beat everyone in the conference if we practice hard and play to our
ability."

Southmont (2-2, 1-1 SAC) evened up its overall and conference record, doing it with defense.

The Mounties held the Warriors to just nine yards on 21 carries and shut down their ground game.

They forced three turnovers, didn't make any themselves and stopped Danville on four of six fourth-down conversion attempts.

That's how they dropped the Warriors for the first time since joining the conference in 1999.

"I
told the kids you're playing for Mountie football players in the past
and present," third-year coach Desson Hannum said. "The kids should
feel proud of accomplishing something like that."

Danville (1-3, 1-2 SAC) committed all three of its turnovers in the first 14 minutes.

Southmont
scored on its opening possession, with junior running back Micah
Hatch's nine-yard touchdown run giving the Mounties a 7-0 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Burton recovered a fumble at the Danville 30-yard-line and Southmont quickly went to work.

Three plays later, the Mounties took a 14-0 lead on senior running back Tanner Hill's one-yard score.

On
the Warriors next possession, Burton intercepted Danville sophomore
quarterback Jon Pedigo (16-of-41, 180 yards) on a fourth-and-nine
attempt.

Two series later, Burton came up with his third
turnover - beating out Hill and diving for a fumble recovery at the
Danville 15-yard-line after Pedigo couldn't hang onto the football.

"[Tanner]
said if I wouldn't have touched it, he would've been able to scoop and
score," said Burton, who recorded his first two fumble recoveries of
his career. "I was just securing the ball."

Three plays later, the Mounties secured a three-touchdown lead.

With another short field, Hatch scored from a yard out to put them up 21-0 with 6:36 to play in the second quarter.

Hatch
led the Mounties in rushing, finishing with 56 yards on 18 carries and
scoring two short-yardage touchdowns. Senior Jordan Burkett added 47
yards on nine carries.

Southmont finished with 131 yards rushing on 46 carries.

Still, Hannum wished they could have done some more damage after scoring all 21 points in the first half.

"We're
happy with the victory and evening up our conference record. But, by no
means, are we happy with our second-half performance," he said. "The
kids know we have to get first downs and put the game out of reach."

Burton,
though, acknowledged the defense accomplished what they set out to do -
stop the run. The turnovers, well, those were just a bonus.

"From
the get-go, we wanted to stop the run," Burton said. "We knew our
secondary could stop the pass. We just need to come out and stop the
run."
