Sitting on a small pink and gray cooler, Mark Hesse watched Crawfordsville High School’s girls swim team celebrate.

His
hands covering his mouth, the Athenians’ swim coach still looked
incredulous at Crawfordsville’s latest Indiana High School Athletic
Association (IHSAA) sectional accomplishment.

What was
expected to be a close IHSAA Crawfordsville Sectional meet turned into
the Athenians’ record-breaking and dominating show Saturday afternoon.

The
Athenians won seven of 12 events, set three sectional records and won
their seventh-straight IHSAA Crawfordsville Sectional crown.

Crawfordsville scored 295 points, outdistancing runner-up Greencastle by 60, and never let its momentum slow down.

“I
was taking it all in,” said Hesse, who was named Coach of the Meet.
“You have an idea as a coach of what they’re capable of. You play out
scenarios. You play out the best case and the worst case in your head.
You see the girls every day. You have an idea but you never know if it
will come together. Everyone, all the girls – swimmers and divers –
they came to together and they erformed like champions.”

Crawfordsville’s run started with the meet’s opening event.

Its
200-yard medley relay team, of juniors Missy Robinson, Victoria
Fairfield, Becca Howland and freshman Shelby Conrad won the opening
event and finished in 1:50.69 – a school record and State cutoff time.

Fairfield
added a win in the 200 freestyle and Robinson placed second – and hit a
State cutoff time in the 200 individual medley.

With
Greencastle closing in after the 50 freestyle, the Athenians’ diving
trio of senior Bekah Simmons, freshman Calli Patton and junior Samantha
Morgan finished first, third and fourth in the event to pull them way
out in front.

They shaved diving coach Dave Whitehead’s head in celebration soon after.

Fairfield
scored another win in the 100 butterfly, Howland added one in the 500
freestyle and the Athenians closed out the meet winning two of the
final four events, including the 200 freestyle relay where they tied
the sectional and pool record (1:41.61) with Southmont’s relay from
2002.

“I’d be lying to you if I said I saw this coming,” Hese
said. “This is great. But it’s what we’re supposed to do. Now we go to
the [IUPUI] Natatorium – us, county swimmers, Greencastle swimmers –
and all need to go down there and represent this part of the state.”

Robinson
advanced to the State finals in both her events – winning the 100-yard
breaststroke with a school, pool and IHSAA Crawfordsville Sectional
record time of 1:03.80 and finishing second and making a State finals
cut in the 200 individual medley.

For Robinson, it was all about the team.

She
wasn’t planning on wearing her fast suit for the 100 breaststroke, but
Hesse wanted her to wear it for the 200 freestyle relay and she didn’t
have enough time to change and switch suits.

Robinson put up
another astounding 100 breaststroke time, and it marked the second time
in three days she’d broken her previous record set last season.

“I’m
not even fully tapered,” said Robinson, who won the event for the
second-straight year. “I’m not shaved. It’s going to go way down . . .
I’m going for 1:02.”

Records were shattered throughout the meet, not only by Crawfordsville but by other Montgomery County schools.

County
rivals Southmont (185) and North Montgomery (166) finished third and
fourth, but will each have at least one swimmer headed to next
weekend’s State finals.

Southmont senior Hilary Mishler won
and set sectional records in both her events, including shattering a
31-year-old pool mark in the 200-yard individual medley.

North Montgomery senior Emily McIlrath broke two school records and will head to the State finals in two individual events.

Mishler
was a nervous wreck throughout the week, worrying about whether she
could hit her best times and reaching her goals. Turned out, she had no
problems.

Mishler finished the 200 individual medley in 2:07.84,
shattering Christine Inman’s sectional record of 2:10.25 set in 2004
and the long-standing pool mark of 2:12.27 set by Crawfordsville’s
Sally Johnson in 1978.

Then, in the 100 backstroke, Mishler
eeked out a win, finishing in 56.58 seconds – just .15 seconds better
than Greencastle senior Kelsey Murtagh.

Mishler’s time broke
Murtagh’s sectional record (58.41 seconds) set last year and Jenny
Connolly’s pool record of 56.61 seconds in 2006.

Murtagh beat Mishler in the event last year, but Mishler vowed it wasn’t going to happen again.

“I
didn’t ever imagine I’d be anywhere this close [to the record],”
Mishler said. “I saw Kelsey there and I was not going to let her beat
me no matter what happened.”

Mishler will have teammates at the State finals with her for the first time in three years.

She
swam on the Mounties’ winning 400 freestyle relay (3:51.45), along with
seniors Abby Dove and April Detro and freshman Victoria Burkhart.

Southmont coach Kevin Hedrick couldn’t have been happier.

“Hilary
really, really stepped up good,” he said. “She exceeded all
expectations for [Saturday]. We’re really, really excited about next
week . . . After seeing Kelsey swim as fast as she did in the 100
[freestyle], I knew it was going to take a 57 to beat her. Last year,
Hilary was sick. This year, she was really on her game.”

McIlrath performed just as well.

She finished second in both her events – the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly but advanced to State in both.

McIlrath
set a school record in the 100 breaststroke, finishing second behind
Robinson in 1:05.44, and also advanced in the 100 butterfly (58.92
seconds).

“[Missy] gave me a good race, which is all I need,”
said McIlrath, who will swim at State for the second-straight year.
“I’m thankful to have her to race against like that. I didn’t think I’d
get a 1:05. I would have been happy with a 1:07.”
