THE PAPER

NEW MARKET – In only her third meet, Southmont High School freshman Kara Price took home her first all-around gymnastics title.

Price
nearly finished with four first-place victories, including the
all-around title, and nearly completed a sweep in Southmont’s
95.85-46.95 Monday night home victory over county-rival North
Montgomery.

Besides winning the all-around with a 32.9, Price
also finished first on the bars (8.625), balance beam (7.7) and floor
exercise (8.325).

Had it not been for a tie for first with
junior teammate Alex Zachary (both with 8.25’s), she would have solely
taken every event.

In fact, she and Zachary each threw new
vaults Monday night – a practice Mounties’ coach Aimee Zachary has
worked with the team on this year.

“Kara threw a tusukara and
Alex threw a front-front,” Aimee Zachary said. “We’re trying to get
more difficulty and higher scores on the vault.”

Zachary also
finished second on the balance beam (7.2) and third on the bars (7.8),
floor exercise (8.15) and all-around (31.4).

Junior Kyra Burton placed second on the bars (8.1), floor exercise (8.25) and all-around (31.25).

The Mounties had four of five gymnasts finish with an 8.0 or higher on the floor exercise.

“We
had four girls all score at least an eight. I’m not disappointed with
that at all,” Aimee Zachary said. “On beam, we’re just trying to stay
on and not fall. Kara stayed on. Alex and Kyra had one fall each . . .
Our routines are cleaner. They’re coming.”

The meet marked North Montgomery’s first team meet since the 1990s.

Daina Rice was the Chargers’ last gymnast, competing as an individual from 1998-2001.

This is the first time since that North Montgomery has not had an individual or team compete since.

North
Montgomery next competes Feb. 17 at county-rival Crawfordsville, while
Southmont competes Saturday at the Merrillville Pirate Pride
Invitational.

It’s the first time they have competed in that meet.
