– They just wanted to break 10 minutes.
Instead, the Southmont High
School girls 3,200-meter relay team raced to one of the most impressive
performances in Sagamore Athletic Conference track meet history.
Seniors
Holly Hatch and Brooke McGaughey, junior Creasy Clauser and freshman Kylie
Lippencott shocked themselves Friday afternoon – leading the Mounties to their
fourth consecutive conference track and field championship.
Southmont’s
girls 3,200 relay shattered the conference record, finishing in 9:46.83 – nearly
23 seconds faster than the previous record of 10:09.28 set by North Montgomery’s
Jordan Foxworthy, Blair Parker, Sommer Redmon and Kristen Wheeler in 2004. They
also broke the Montgomery County girls record.
“We knew the time to beat
was 10:09. Our goal was to get under 10 (minutes),” Hatch said. “But we had no
idea we could run that fast.”
Southmont scored 131 points, winning
Friday’s conference meet by a single point over Danville at Danville High
School. Frankfort (112) finished third, llowed by Western Boone (78), Lebanon
(64), Tri-West (41), Crawfordsville (36) and North Montgomery (26).
With
the Mounties winning the final event – the 1,600 relay – they brought home
another title and left normally reserved coach Marvin Williams emotional and
nearly speechless.
From the 3,200 relay team’s win, to Clauser winning
the 800 and setting another conference record, to freshman Allie Norris pulling
out the 300 hurdles title, to senior Holly Hatch and freshman Madison Fouty’s
personal-best runs and second- and fifth-place finishes in the 3,200, they
showed the conference their not done with their title-reign yet.
“These
girls are unbelievable,” Walters said. “They refuse to lose. They refuse to
lose. This team found a way to win the championship, whatever it takes to pull
it out they did it.”
They forgot about the wet track, rain sprinkling
down on them and the fall-like temperature – and raced.
Thanks to a
strong start from McGaughey and a career-best finish from Clauser, the Mounties
cruised to the 3,200 relay title.
With her teammates yelling at her to
sprint the last 1/4-mile, Clauser took off. She ran her fastest 800 of her
career, finishing the final two laps in 2:15.5 – four seconds quicker than her
previous best time set this season.
“I had no idea what was going on,”
Clauser said.
Afterward, Hatch noticed the team’s tag number, No. 1, and
asked if anyone would like to keep it. Clauser happily volunteered.
“I
can’t even hear right right now,” said Clauser, as the Mounties’ record-setting
time was announced.
Norris won the 300 hurdles, finishing in 50.95
seconds – a little more than two seconds better than Danville’s Samantha Harden.
Freshman Kylie Lippencott placed second in the 1,600 and third in the 800.
Senior Carrie Rhoads tied for second with Danville’s Nicole Cullison in the pole
vault. They each cleared 8 feet, 6 inches.
Crawfordsville junior Liz
Fowler placed second in the shot put (32 feet, 1½ inches) and third in the
discus (87 feet, 6 inches). The Athenians also finished fourth in the 1,600
relay.
Although they were without freshman sprinter Haley Horner, who
suffered a serious knee injury in a non-track related accident earlier in the
week, Crawfordsville coach Brian Miller was pleased.
“The girls ran
pretty well,” Crawfordsville coach Brian Miller said. “Liz Fowler did well and
our relay team looked good.”
North Montgomery freshman Celia Kauth
finished third in the high jump (4 feet, 8 inches) and sixth in the long jump.
Marie Long finished fifth in the 400 while junior Emily McIlrath placed fifth in
the pole vault.
